Diary of a Turtle helped my students better understand the impact plastic waste can have on marine life. Agree
Hi, thank you for your resource. I need to apologise as we did not get around to using it this year. We did introduce it to the class prior to our school visit to Kelly Tarltons. We discussed the impact of bad environmental decisions on the well-being of turtles, the children were very interested in this. They were then able to make connections when taught about the injured turtles at Kelly Tarltons. As we have many of the same children in our class next year we will use it then. I look forward to using the whole kit in 2026.

I received this kit to teach with my year 0/1 class and found it really valuable. There was a good integration of various curriculum areas and it was easy to follow and complete each activity. My class is still talking about turtles weeks later and we continue to track out adopted turtle. Their understanding of how rubbish in our environment (school and local community) impacts on more than they think was great learning.

My Y0/1 were very interested in this topic. I found it diificult to negoitiate finding a turtle and the map was very little to blow up on the screen for them to see. We did work out how far it was that the turtle travelled each day in relation to our playground which was staggering. It was a shame that there were no NZ or closer to NZ turtles to track.

The students loved tracking the turtle. The students chose our turtle and bagan the collaborative art piece. We then moved onto tracking our turtle and discussing the environment around us and how we can look after our erath and why we need to look after our Earth. We created our own Moana using recyclable rubbish and stuck them on the wall by our whole class Moana. We ended with completed posters of how to look after our world and did the clean up. The students were very excited and all participated with excitement. The only issue we had was Moana could not be tracked any more so this lost a little bit of the students interest.

Lots of learning happened but I found it hard being part time and trying to fit it in on my days with all the other things that were expected to be done.

The diary of a turtle kit was great for my year 2 class. They have found a real commitment for ensuring that our kura is tidy and are always asking if we can go for our 'tidy kiwi hikoi' to pick up rubbish both around our kura but also in our community kai forest right next to the kura. The gloves and bags were great for this. They noticed how much rubbish was in our kura and were shocked. They took this learning home and would tell me stories about how they went to the beach and picked up rubbish with their whānau. They loved being able to track turtles and felt good that they were doing their part to ensure that turtles were living a great life.
