Was there a particular component that struck a chord with your class? The elements of self care, the boys first saw this as quite girly but as we unpacked this more, they realised they could relate to the tasks very well.

“Although our kopa did not quite get through all of this kit as it came to the end of the year, we loved working through it as a tool for ourselves as well as how we can better interact with others in our lives, showing support, resilience, and love. I would highly recommend this for intermediate age taiohi as they navigate this very different time in their lives. My boys and girls enjoyed this all the same.”

“This kit was hard to use at first in the class because it was an unfamiliar topic to many of my students. Something that alot of them had never though of before. This kit was a huge success for my girls and encouraged them to reflect on how they spoke to themselves and each other.”

Was there a particular component that struck a chord with your class? Definitely when we talked about our strengths, and worked on our definition of beauty. Also getting each other to say what they liked/appreciated about the others was also pretty powerful.

How has this the kit influenced the way in which students speak to each other? It definitely helped to inform conversations and restorative actions

Which response stood out most? I think it was good for the girls to see that lots of people felt inadequate about themselves or had different levels of self-esteem so they didn't feel like it was just them.

What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? We created journals that the girls put entries in, and where we wrote our strengths, and what others saw as our strengths, and I left encouraging messages, as well as putting in positive affirmations - the girls took these home at the end and I think will treasure them.

“I think that this is probably more suitable to older children than the ones I was working with in Year 6. Some of the content was a little intense for their age. A couple of the suggested videos were inappropriate for this age group as well so I'm thankful that I previewed first. I was working with a tricky group of girls, and it was quite challenging to get feedback from a trusted adult for them - quite a number didn't trust or want an adult approached to fill out the form. The positives of this were the focus on social media and the girls really enoyed carrying out a survey to see how people felt about themselves. The conversations that we had where we celebrated one anothers strengths and giftedness were precious. I added in some work from Te Whare Tapawhā and felt that this unit might be strengthened by some a more bicultural approach as well. I was working with a group who were predominantly Māori hence my need to widen the resources I used.”

How has this the kit influenced the way in which students speak to each other? It has gotten better, there are still times where i will have to go over about respecting others and how we would like people to treat oneself.
