“This unit was more focussing on high school or year 7/8 terms at the best. I felt that the body awareness was a bit too adult and the activities were quite difficult for 8 year olds to learn especially forming breasts etc.”

What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? The positive impact that the parent letter had will continue to live on with the kids.

“Love the concept of self-esteem, however, the students found it difficult to connect with the Self Esteem 24 kit as the content was not suited to students at Year 4 and 5. Students however, did enjoy going through the circle of influence, tracking their strengths and writing the "inspired by" poem. The check -in didn't work as the box didn't have the dividers so this was a disappointement for the students, especially those who had worked through the Dove Self Esteem Kit. The students could not identify with the Yes/No questions. The students loved the letters from their parents.”

Was there a particular component that struck a chord with your class? I liked the idea of building self esteem and we talked a lot about trying not to let bad things influence us if at all possible. We used the idea of bouncing back from those difficult situations.

Which response stood out most? It was difficult to get a response to those questions. Most kids had no idea how the adults in their life thought or acted.

What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? I like the idea that we have sown a seed and hopefully will revisit it one day.

“The kit had a lot of great ideas but unfortunately it didn't work for our kids. It involved taking papers home and kids asking parents/caregivers about someone they looked up to. A lot of our parents would struggle to name someone who helped them when they were young or had input in their lives. It was hard to get students to take something home and harder still to get them to bring it back. I felt it was a bit old for my students and perhaps the wrong demographic.”

How has this the kit influenced the way in which students speak to each other? They are definitely a lot more positive in their interactions, lots of encouragement etc. When this is forgotten about, others in the class quickly remind each other.

What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? The dot art, and visually recognising how we can have the same values but be so different.

“It's a pretty special topic and the kits are beautiful, but I found this kit a bit hard to follow as the tasks were a bit vague. Getting the first couple of tasks done, (the letter and values task) took quite a while, as families were slow to return things, so it was hard to get momentum. I will continue on with this topic as I think it's important. Good effort though, with a few tweaks it could be great.”

“The programme provides a great set of resources that allow tamariki to see themselves in a postive light and highlights their strengths (that they might not have thought they had. Flexiblilty allows focus on areas that the teacher feels tamariki might benefit more from.”
