Was there a particular component that struck a chord with your class? I liked the idea of building self esteem and we talked a lot about trying not to let bad things influence us if at all possible. We used the idea of bouncing back from those difficult situations.

Which response stood out most? It was difficult to get a response to those questions. Most kids had no idea how the adults in their life thought or acted.

What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? I like the idea that we have sown a seed and hopefully will revisit it one day.

“The kit had a lot of great ideas but unfortunately it didn't work for our kids. It involved taking papers home and kids asking parents/caregivers about someone they looked up to. A lot of our parents would struggle to name someone who helped them when they were young or had input in their lives. It was hard to get students to take something home and harder still to get them to bring it back. I felt it was a bit old for my students and perhaps the wrong demographic.”

How has this the kit influenced the way in which students speak to each other? They are definitely a lot more positive in their interactions, lots of encouragement etc. When this is forgotten about, others in the class quickly remind each other.

What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? The dot art, and visually recognising how we can have the same values but be so different.

“It's a pretty special topic and the kits are beautiful, but I found this kit a bit hard to follow as the tasks were a bit vague. Getting the first couple of tasks done, (the letter and values task) took quite a while, as families were slow to return things, so it was hard to get momentum. I will continue on with this topic as I think it's important. Good effort though, with a few tweaks it could be great.”

“The programme provides a great set of resources that allow tamariki to see themselves in a postive light and highlights their strengths (that they might not have thought they had. Flexiblilty allows focus on areas that the teacher feels tamariki might benefit more from.”

“There were some fantastic activities in this kit which were so important for my class of mainly teenage girls. We found that the support material was good but we would have benefitted from a more structured unit plan with activities laid out in order. We job share and found it hard to pick up from where the other had left off as there wasn't a clear order.”

How has this the kit influenced the way in which students speak to each other? I have maintained the morning check in box for students. This is a great way for students quietly share how they are feeling.

An adult in my life has skipped meals or chosen different foods because they want to change how they look. 9 - 33% 18 - 66% An adult in my life has tried to avoid being in a photo or taking a selfie because they don't like how they look. 7 - 25% 21 - 75% An adult in my life has teased me about my appearance. 6 - 23% 20 - 77% An adult in my life has spoken negatively about a part of their own body or appearance. 15 - 50% 15 - 50% I asked an adult woman in my life if she thought she was beautiful and she said yes. 15 - 71% 6 - 29% An adult in my life has sought approval from someone else about how they looked before going out somewhere 24 - 96% 1 - 4% An adult in my life has shared positive affirmations about their own body or appearance. 15 - 57% 11 - 43% An adult in my life has vocally compared their body or appearance to somebody else in social media. 1 - 3% 25 - 97% An adult in my life has said they are grateful for the body they have - its strengths and ability/functionality. 21 - 84% 4 - 16% An adult in my life follows an 'appearance based' social media account. 5 - 19% 21 - 81%. Many of these answers were surprising to us all!!!!

What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? Something I think important to change is that boys and men need to be included in the videos too. I know DOVE products are mostly female centered but they have male products too. Many in my class asked why boys weren't featured in the videos. We had great discussion around that this was not just something females feel but men can be feeling inadequate too.

“Great unit. I found some of the tasks difficult to follow. I ended up not doing two of them due to mucking up the instructions. The self-inquiry - ticking the 9 circles under 4 different categories = I accidentally did this for the Values class poem. I also didn't understand the cards in the envelops task - I didn't understand how this was to be used and interacted with by the students. The cards are great - I will use these as part of a rotation of positive affirmations each morning.”
