“What an awesome kit to provide hands on, community focussed learning. My class loved being able to analyse their strengths and weaknesses and use these to organise their projects. This created awesome relationships between some students who wouldn't usually work together. Great to see our students taking Pride in their school and community”
“Excellent resource. My students have participated in the local community food bank run here in Turangi. Next week we will be picking up rubbish around our local area, we will be doing this with the help of the local council.”
“Our class loved watching and learning about the SVA movement that began after the Christchurch earthquakes. We thought about how they could volunteer in our community and really wanted to help others by growing food to provide. We researched types of gardens that were already in our school and what we would like to grow. We had platoon members who worked on planning, safety (gloves and masks for our gardening), mapping our garden and directing others. Many skills were needed to create our garden. We are planning to continue our learning by sharing back at a community event, harvesting some of the food and selling the extra seedlings that we grew as our garden was too small. With the money raised, we hope to protect our gardens further from birds and being broken during play times. Thanks Schoolkit for such a fun kit, as always it was packed full of amazing resources.”
“Our Tamariki are completing their SVA Kit this week. They have chosen to involve the community by looking at the changes we can make to be a kinder community. We have used ideas from various groups and have thought about how we can bring our community together. We are holding a community day, with activities and fun for all, shared kai and a range of activities led by the students.”
“Wow what an amazing kit, it has ignited thinking in a way that are other inquiry based learning hasnt.
Full of possibilities and lots of life skills on offer.”
“Kirikiritatangi were really motivated by this resource. thinking about how we could be of service to our community. We particularly enjoyed finding out what skills and dispositions we had and finding the best fit for a particular role. After much discussion we decided on two community projects both to do improving our environment. For our first project we explored how we could create bird corridors in our community. We planted tree and bushes to attract bird life / read about and designed predator tracking traps. We also planned and are ready to implement a clean up from our school to the sea along the path of the stream that runs beside our school. Our plan is to prevent as much rubbish getting into the Awa as possible. We will send photos when we have completed this challenge”
“This Term we have been planning a SVA project to support children in CHOC at Christchurch Hospital. Earlier this year one of our classmates, Morne was diagnosed with Leukemia. He has spent a lot of time in hospital since his diagnosis and we have supported him by making games, cards and pictures for him. We understand how boring it must be spending so much time in bed in a small room, so we wanted to think of a way to help children like our friend Morne. After much discussion, we decided we wanted to make craft-packs to give to each child so they can be creative and have fun while in hospital. We have also spent time learning how play therapy can be a huge help for children who are sick. Alongside these packs, we have also been in contact with Monkey in My Chair, an organisation that supports children with cancer to return to the classroom and normality. Our monkey is called Bob! Thanks so much for the awesome kit, School Kit.”
