“This is a wonderful resource that has helped our student understand the importance of giving back. We will be completing our rubbish ramble next week in our local wetlands near our school. They chose this as it is a place all our local schools as well as the community use. Our student felt it was a place that should be better looked after. We have also set up a garden group to grow veges. Students loved all the resources that came along with the kit and the different jobs that were included.”
“Ms Elliot's Class with Student Volunteer Army
";Our SVA Project: Volunteering for the Waihi SPCA
Our class of Year 7/8's have decided to base our project around helping out the Waihi SPCA. We had plans to make a trip down to our local centre as the students wanted to help out by being a volunteer for a day- helping out with the daily work of caring for animals, walking dogs, cleaning cages and feeding the animals.
We began our planning process and made contact with our local centre only to find that the Waihi SPCA was temporarily closed because of a staffing shortage. Because of this, there were no animals there either. This caused us to stop and think of a new direction to take with our SVA project. We are now re-starting with a new focus to help out the SPCA. Our class is now planning to make a number of animal toys at school as well as collecting animal food to donate to the centre when it reopens.
Here are some of us planning what we are going to do next. The students are starting to research how to make animal toys for cats and dogs and what materials we will need to use to make them safe and fun for the animals.";”
“The Waihi College Year 7&;8 Student Volunteer Army from SKE went to give back to Hetherington House and Waihi East School today.
We went and played games and talked to the elderly. They have knowledge that no one else does. One lady said 'live like a young person while you can'. They were all laughing and smiling with us.
Then at East School we coached the basketball team and did a quiz and made friendship bracelets with a class. It was a great experience.";”
“Thank you for the kit. We have done clean up work around the school, repainted areas and seating, went to help out at kindy and planted trees at local marae. Thanks Ailsa”
“SVA in Dudley is Kaitiaki Kids - adopting a Dudley Creek site, cleaning it up, gathering data on how we found it, look after the stream long term.
Step 2 is to do the same thing in our own backyard at school. Dudley making a difference - thanks School Kit - a fantastic launch day.”
“We have thoroughly enjoyed using the SVA kit. We have used it with our school enviro group rather than with a class. The enviro group is made up of 20 students ranging from 6-11 years old. They all enjoyed thinking about the skills they feel are their strengths and then applying for a role. The process to decide what project we were going to tackle was also well done as the students were able to see other schools projects and then narrow it down from there. We are still in the process of completing our project and look forward to sending through some photos of our SVA in action.”
“The Room 4 SVA loved this kit! After considering a few different ideas, we settled on supporting the LOVE LETTERS organisation!
We have had whanau and learners from other classes helping us to get creative and get behind this great cause!
We are also exploring the possibility of sharing some with our local hospital to spread the love in a local community!
Lots of fun, lots of laughs and awesome collaboration from our Room 4 MKids!
Thanks to the School Kit team for putting this kit together and for the opportunity to be involved and to put our school REACH learning values into action!”
