“Our four junior classes (inspired by the SVA kit) are about to go and visit the Department of Conservation, and learn about what we can do to save the kiwi.
We live in Northland, and sadly kiwi are being run over on the roads. Can we send another review after the 10th December? We haven't had the kit for long, as I only got it at U-Learn in October. :)”
“I am not sure how the school kit get involved in schools. All what we got was a parcel with some tsuff in it. It didn't mean anything except for some planning sheet and some badges.”
“Love this kit. This is the second time we have done this kit. We have now made our ";Service day"; an annual event. We work fro the community, serve the elderly, teach at daycares and clean/complete chores for those in need. Our students love this day. Seeing the smiles that they put on other's faces by ";giving back"; is all the reward they need.”
“The kit was very comprehensive. We are still working our way through the tasks as the task we decided to do was quite comprehensive in itself and is school wide.
We feel we will use this resource into 2020”
“The Room 9 SVA decided to work locally, focussing their energy on getting our very overgrown and unused school vegetable gardens cleaned up so we can start a Garden to Table programme next year. We organised for a skip to be delivered and also some parents to come and help out. The gardens are now clear and the neighbours allowed us to remove the privet, which will be chipped. The next step is to add some extra soil/compost, which will be delivered next week. Good work Room 9!”
“Great kit. We did a ‘Be the Difference’ project and went up our local mountain bike track to clear the trails, dig out gutters, reinforce berms and generally have a whole lot of fun. We have been looking into Kaitiakitanga so re-purposed some old disguaded scooter/skate jumps to reinforce them to be bike jumps. Great inspiration, the yellow jackets were great fir leading the bike ride to our destination for each of the 6 sessions we put in. Thank you”
“Our children loved working on our project. We worked on cleaning up our neighborhood. We have a lovely bike track behind our school that has just been built. We walked the block, cleaning as we went, cleaned the bike park and cleaned up our school. We collected a lot of rubbish to be put in the skip.”
“We did not use the kit as a class, rather our timetable allows for students to plan and direct their own learning. Given this framework, it was up to the students to self nominate and take ownership of a project that they were passionate about and the SVA Resources where there if they wanted them.
I had two students who jumped on the idea of doing good in our community and also have the chance to lead others. They were stoked with all of the kit that arrived from badges, to hi-vis vests and flags. They organised a group of students with a teacher to help them go out and pick up rubbish around town on a regular basis during term three. While doing this, they noticed that there was a problem with graffiti around town. They found and contacted another agency (I think it was the local council) who work on the issue of graffiti and were supplied with some equipment to work on removing it. They also built a box for book donations and set up a book swap system for our school.
As a teacher, I liked the resources and the guidance the kit provided as it helped me frame such projects in terms of students taking agency over change rather than raising money and giving it to someone else to follow through with.”
