“Room 18 and 19 at Tirimoana really enjoyed attempting the Walk the Length of NZ kit.
It was a fun process trying out all the different step counters. The learners reflected well on what ones worked well and which didn't. Some of the counters were very flawed and so that was fun /challenging trying to work out how to count up the steps accurately.
We were able to implement this kit into our Maths rotation and the learners did some statistics around their steps etc.”
“e held our walk the length of the country day yesterday and with the help of many, we managed to make it from the tippy top to the very bottom. We are still counting steps. We are in Timaru at the mo, seeing how far we can get back up the country! Thanks school kit for another great resource! My class and school loved this one!!

Can do this at a later date once completed
“Our class is still working through this, we started but due to production we got a bit stalled on our progress. We are endeavouring to complete our time and length during our walks to and from our production hall. The students have loved using the different counters and a really inspired to complete the challenge. After every session we have calculated our steps and google mapped our progress. The engagement of all maths learners has increased with everyone now calculating their steps, it has been a great success and it has also inspired more determination to work as a team to complete a task together. As we are finishing off by the end of the year I can send in our final talley then.”

“My students thoroughly enjoyed this school kit, they enjoyed looking at and discussing the different types of pedometers. On the day we completed a number of activities that involved walking/running, it was good to see the engagement and the thinking happening in relation to the maths we had done beforehand.”

“This was such an amazing kit. Students were intrigued and enjoyed trying out the different step counters to see which was most effective and how easy it was to cheat! We loved the fact we increased our daily exercise and put our maths and measurement skills to use in order to calculate our step length. We can't wait to give this another go in 2020.”

We were at camp for 3 days. 26 students and 10 adults took part. Total steps were 1,339,884.
“So we used camp as a good way to build up steps. The kids liked the clickers best as the others were not so accurate. They did require more concentration then most of them had.”

“Hi, We incorporated this into our training for cross country. Encouraging our children to get out running and seeing how many steps they could take. Due to time constraints we modified the unit slightly. The resources still providing an opportunity for the students to learn about measuring using different methods. This is a valuable tool that provided a varied and treasured experience for the students in a mixed age classroom.”

298,434 was our best total, so we didn't make it the length but it was interesting trying.
“We loved this kit. We worked solidly to collect our steps daily for several weeks. We started by following the teaching plan and we kept a record of our steps daily. It really helped with reading and understanding numbers and place value. We found out quickly that some of the counters were more accurate and therefore more favorable than others and as a result some students were coming to school earlier than usual to get the better counters. Some students lost interest in using them after the second week. They loved the counters that they had to click themselves (often resetting them by accident). We had a class next door working on the same kit so instead of asking whanau to donate their steps we worked with the neighbouring class to collect and total the number of steps to walk the length of NZ . Some students were out running all break times to get higher step totals. (We didn't use the meter wheel at all.)”
