We want to collate the huge number of steps from accross NZ, please share your final number with us. We collected 900, 094 steps!
Thank you! My Year 4 class loved this School Kit. They enjoyed experimenting with the different types of pedometers and the silver mechanical counters were their absolute favourite. Some of the pedometers did stop working (mainly the wristband one) however we just turned that into a learning experience so that we could compare which was the best as well as the most accurate. We wrote letters to our whanau, friends and other classes within our school to persuade them join us in our challenge to walk the length of Aotearoa by looking into the benefits of walking to help keep us healthy. We even researched the history of pedometers and how they work. The students were excited and completely engaged in this learning. It was a fun hands on unit to teach.

We want to collate the huge number of steps from accross NZ, please share your final number with us. 2,245,919. This works out to be 1,684kms in total, not quite the 2,083kms needed. But, we did get to Timaru!! (Well, technically we are 16kms outside of Timaru, but close enough )
My fellow hub teacher had also registered for the kit. Donated steps were sent to our blog or on the school fb page. The learning, discussions and engagement with my Maths group (measuring, converting, guessing, checking, &; calculating) was what made this a rich maths task. Thanks https://walknzinoneday.blogspot.com/?m=1

Fantastic kit. Measurement has never been so meaningful. We love finding out our average walking, running and skipping stride. So much longer than our estimates. We combined our walk with athletics as lots of Whanau around that day, so we have another week and a half until we do our day.

We want to collate the huge number of steps from accross NZ, please share your final number with us. 2,780,484 steps
We made it! This kit has been a wonderful way for the girls to use their mathematical skills, organisational skills, communications skills and tested out their perseverance! There was a lot of support from our school community and through everyone's amazing efforts WE MADE IT! We accumulated a total of 2,780,484 steps. Literally EVERY STEP COUNTED on the day. Thanks School Kit for a fabulous resource.

We want to collate the huge number of steps from accross NZ, please share your final number with us. First we walked 253 kilometers - we averaged our steps of 422300 steps. we then needed 9 other classrooms to help us at our current rate to achieve the distance.
The students really enjoyed the maths involved as well as the variety of step counters. The shoelaces were a particular favourite. Some great learning about averaging and steps. It was a real shock for the students exactly how many steps we required - we didn't quite make it the length but some great learning.

We want to collate the huge number of steps from accross NZ, please share your final number with us. Sorry - we haven't completed it quite yet, planning to complete in the next few weeks.
We have been really enjoying using the Walking the Length of New Zealand kit in Tui Room at Maheno School. It is an awesome way to encourage fitness alongside maths and a bit of geography too. The use of different pedometers meant that there was a ";fair testing"; aspect. We are nearly finished but haven't quite finished the kit - hopefully in the next couple of weeks.

We want to collate the huge number of steps from accross NZ, please share your final number with us. We are still working on this!
We were so lucky enough to have the walk the length of New Zealand kit. This was such a fun kit to work through too! Students had great fun measuring their average step size and learning to make conversions between metres to cm. There was a lot of learning in this kit! My students also enjoyed testing out the range of pedometers and having in depth discussions about how well they thought they work. Every group test was slightly different and it was obvious that different people prefer different things. It was fun coming up with a range of ways to increase the number of steps and students are still talking about how many steps they do or think they do in a day. Also we used google mymaps to calculate distances around the school and checked out the accuracy of these by measuring them ourselves! Another fantastic kit! There was a big change from the first day when they told me I was crazy thinking we could walk the length of New Zealand in one day!
