Walk the length of NZ 19 Reviews

4.6 Rating 237 Reviews
The class are loving this unit. Due to illness I was away for several weeks at the end of last term and we therefore have not yet finished the challenge. We have explored the length of our individual step, practiced converting steps to metres and kilometres, estimated our daily activity. This week we are keeping a daily record of the steps we take using the pedometers and will compare our estimates with the readings we get from the devices. Next week we will invite our community to help us walk the length of New Zealand. I'll post another update with photos and our steps when we complete the challenge. Thanks for the awesome resource!

We want to collate the huge number of steps from accross NZ, please share your final number with us. We haven't completed the whole challenge so no final tally just yet.
Good resource - heaps of critical thinking involved in deciding which pedometer was best and we had lots of fun trying them out. It was a bit too advanced for my Yr 3s, so a lot of scaffolding needed.

My class totally loved the challenge, inquiry &; fun of this kit. Investigating which pedometer was appropriate, what worked well for our class and how we could make this fun!

Thank you so much for sharing this kit with us. The class had a great time testing out the different equipment (and debating the best and worst versions). They also debated the merits of honesty vs cheating (as the competition for steps was very fierce). This was a great, meaningful way of practicing converting meters to cms to mms, talking about accuracy, adding, finding averages and a lot more. Our average step length was 0.63m and we figured out it would take 3,336,504 of our steps - WOW! Sadly we came up short. As a teacher I loved how this task was both practical and meaningful, it highlighted some of the learning we had been doing and identified some areas where we need more practice. Thank you again for this wonderful kit.

What a fabulous kit! Lots and lots of learning took place, with students so engaged they often would not even want to stop for lunch! We did not make it to Bluff, but we did learn about many different places in New Zealand.

We were thrilled to be part of this event and had huge support from others across the school who wanted to donate their distances to us. However, rain was a real issue and in the end we only managed to walk 929.8 kms on the only dry day we had in the last week of term. It really was a lot of fun and would love to do this again next year.

We are currently doing this kit, as we became too busy with welcoming and hosting our Chinese School last term and time just got sway from us, however the students are enjoying the math and thing behind this kit, also the cool gadgets that we have to use, especially the light up laces. will get some further feedback when completed, thanks.
