Our total was around 2,500,000!
“It was difficult to keep track of steps as students aren't allowed their phone in class during the day so if we wanted to use the apps and get a accurate reading they would need to use the other ways to add (which weren't accurate..)
The students enjoyed using the silver clickers, and the finger counters. We found that the wrist bands were the least accurate as small movements would add multiple numbers. The students had great conversations about this though!”

We were 246 000 shy of the target.
“My class thoroughly enjoyed this kit. They LOVED the pedometers and the challenge of increasing their daily step count etc. Unfortunately on the day we had nominated to be THE DAY, it was raining and we were stuck inside so our steps were lower than normal.”

The estimations varied, but the con census (average of the most popular totals was 1,650,357 steps.
“The kit was fantastic and brought to the surface many, many discussions, disagreements, discoveries and affirmations for our learners about measurement and calculating distance. The children worked individually, with a buddy and in teams on the different parts of the challenge and were thoroughly engaged throughout using and comparing all the different measurement tools. Thank you so much.”

“This was a really engaging kit - we are still going with it in to term 4. The kids enjoyed using and testing all the different pedometers. Their favourites (surprisingly) were the manual ones!
We had our day to collect steps and managed 2,398,792”
“It was a great kit and having the variety of pedometers caused lots of discussion about which would be the most useful, interestingly, the learners thought the ones you have to manually click were more useful and accurate.
We discovered that sometimes people with shorter legs actually had a longer average stride length than some of the taller people - which had us really puzzled, so we did lots of looking at how people stride when they walk and how some of our taller learners tended to shuffle rather than stride.
We used the kit as part of our Maths lesson, and it was perfectly timed as we used our stride measurements to measure out our cross country course and compare our results with that of the official measurement.
Some of the maths involved was quite a challenge for some of us, but the learners persevered and gained some new understandings.
Teacher support material was outstanding, very detailed and lots of useful ideas to work through.
Due to a couple of unexpected interruptions, we have yet to do our final day of step collection, but will send through our final results as soon as we can.”

“My class had an absolutely great time with this kit. We started by trying to guess how long it takes between each of the major points in the country and working out fast ways to get there. Then giving them time to play with the different counters and figure out how they work was a great time to see their skills. And of course tiring them out with lots of steps and running around was an added bonus! We loved it!”

1,440,427 - cross country really helped!
“Great kit. The kids enjoyed the different mechanisms and it linked to our maths beautifully for the term. It was a little confusing that the each item in the pack isn't actually written about so we had to search and search to figure out the laces were a prize! The kids did it as part of our cross country training which made it a lot more engaging for them (no more groans as we went out to run!) Making it authentic learning really helped their maths, although their ";steps"; were often lunges which was hilarious! I had to explain they didn't walk around like that all day and if they did, they'd have issues ha ha! Fantastic kit thank you!”

As a class on any given day our best score as a group was 176, 098 steps in one day. Our best week was a total of 421,236.
“Room 13 did our step activity and loved it! We trialled it first by having some practice days to see how many steps we could get on a typical school day. We recruited some extra help from family and friends where we could. We also got out and about on to the school field and courts at every opportunity. We are keen to have another go at it, and will plan for this later in Term 4. It was lots of fun and the students enjoyed having a pedometer and going for it with their steps! Happy to send through some of our photos, too.”
