“A great exercise to keep children moving. The enthusiasm was so great we even ran on the spot while participating in silent reading. The discussions around the different pedometers was interesting too with children liking different aspects of each. We plan to use them again when we go on school camp.”

“Walk the Length of New Zealand was amazing. We combined it with an Amazing Race for our Senior School. While we were away on our Amazing Race the Junior and middle syndicates all did laps of the courts and the fields. We has used the younger children to calculate the average number of steps it would take them. We also posted a message on our school facebook page and received a huge number of donated steps. It was so cool to see how many people supported us.”
“Due to a busy start and new class configurations we were quite late starting this unit. Once we got going we really enjoyed it. The maths engaged the kids and they were really interested in the pedometers variations. The unit was especially motivating to get all kids moving - even the usually reluctant ones. Kids We managed 280,701 steps.”

“My class and their whanau really got into this challenge. So much so that we had some very questionable step totals being submitted. This enabled us to discuss the reliability of different devices. I had one family member thank me for running this challenge because it motivated their entire family to go out for an evening walk - together. I managed to draw in friends and family from across the globe as well as social media friends. So much interest and support given. We ended up walking all the way down and made it back up to somewhere between Dunedin and Christchurch. The class were pretty excited to see how our steps converted to so many kilometres. A successful School Kit but I did have to squeeze it into a shorter space of time than was recommended.”

“What wonderfu resources were provided with this kit. My class were really enthusiastic to get outdoors and go walking just to use the different types of pedometers. We quickly realised that not all were as accurate as others. The hand held clicker was the hot favourite! It promoted lots of discussion in our class. Another awesome kit!”

“This was a thoroughly engaging unit that tied into our study of internationalisation and globalisation. The students were eager to share with their families and the families were excited to share their steps with the students and be a part of our learning. The students enjoyed using the different pedometers and comparing them through discussion. The thinking and exploring that this resource promoted was wonderful and the students still enjoy using the pedometers as part of their Math problem solving. I do have some photos I would love to share, but it wouldn't let me!”

“A fantastic hands on resource for our children. Although we didn't manage to walk the length of NZ our 16 children in our senior room really enjoyed the challenge! We changed our goal to try to reach Auckland which we achieved - a fantastic effort for our tiny school!”
