“What I do love about your kits are your lesson plans and supporting videos! I was just wondering if there could be some supporting videos on how to actually do them. My year 7s and 8s struggled with the wording a bit and it would have been helpful to see it modeled to them before the chalk stream. I don’t know if it’s possible, but also videos on how the profressionals do it too! I’m in a farming town so this is totally something that they might have to do later in life!”

We are continuing with our enviroschools work with a group of students and continuing our planting project and some students have shown an interest in testing the river at different times of the year and different locations to gather data over time.

In what ways did this kit develop understanding of the cultural significance of water in Te Ao Māori? Central Otago is a community that relies hugely on water for farming, growing and leisure. Water quality We also tied in with this unit a waterways planting on a local farm. Our students are very aware of water supply and water quality issues now.

“We have had some great feedback from students, parents and the wider community about this project. On our river visit we were filmed by The South Today and a video clip appeared on the ODT site. This raised a lot of interest in the testing we were doing!”

What opportunities have arisen for future learning from this kit? It has allowed us to explore larger waterways and our impact on them. During our School Camp, we were able to explore how wildlife moved from area to area and what helps to keep these areas healthy.

In what ways did this kit develop understanding of the cultural significance of water in Te Ao Māori? The children had quite a bit of prior knowledge about this already but it certainly provided a refresher. It was also helpful for those children that had less knowledge.

“This was a highly interesting kit and it linked well to our inquiry unit we were doing. We co-ordinated with our EnviroSchools leader as well so it was great to have the support of both EnviroSchools and the kit.”

What opportunities have arisen for future learning from this kit? We really do need to investigate our local waterways better and their ecosystems. It would've been good to work with other organisations, which was our intentions however due to Covid levels changing this wasn't able to happen.

“I found this kit difficult to follow as there wasn't a lot of information on how to use the testing equipment. With the students I have more detail would've been good. I found this to be a bit of an add on so it didn't get covered very well.”
