In what ways did this kit develop understanding of the cultural significance of water in Te Ao Māori? We did the pepeha, but I think once we were past the introductory part of the kit the To Ao Maori part of the kit wasn't as significant. It would be good to tie this in for the whole of the unit.

“Hi there, this kit was fabulous for hooking in my learners in a local science inquiry. The kit also came with everything that I needed to make sure I was able to teach it effectively. We've also linked this kit in with our larger focus for this term - sustainability and water. My only negative was that four weeks to teach the content and take a trip was a bit of a tight turnaround!”

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? We linked this into our Reading and Maths Programme which gave a real life authentic experience for the children. We are currently looking at Google Sheets and gathering data to create a chart. We are using some of our data here to graph the results.

What opportunities have arisen for future learning from this kit? I have been careful to look after the resources and it can all be used again. The need for a clean up of the area came up from this, looking at the surrounding area and identifying risks for the health of the stream would be a good next step.

In what ways did this kit develop understanding of the cultural significance of water in Te Ao Māori? The kit provided us with links to generate our pepeha, supporting videos and karakia. All of which helps support our connection to our maunga, whenua and our awa.

“Our kura focus is around building our tamariki as budding scientists. So when this kit presented itself - we jumped at the chance. The kit provided us with the means necessary to explore our local water ways. We have a stream right behind our kura so that was our obvious choice. We were also intrigued with our water way of choice (Mangawhero Stream) as it had risen dramatically during the floods here in Northland and it had an impact on our kura directly. This sparked a lot of thinking and wondering about the living world beneath the waters surface and the quality of the water from nearby farms.”
