We found this kit to be an extremely valuable resource. Our students loved the way scientific rigour was connected to a real life place that is part of their local environment. It has bought about a desire for the school to become a guardian of the local stream and we intend to set up a group that will make this happen.

In what ways did this kit develop understanding of the cultural significance of water in Te Ao Māori? Our stream leads directly into the Kaipara Harbour and our school strongly identifies with Maori cultural values. We regularly complete harbour surveys and this kit helped us to identify what is entering the harbour via our local stream.
As a resource the testing kit allowed us to investigate the nature of science strand- posing questions, collecting data, analyzing results and using these to pose new questions. The students carried this further by researching how to improve the local stream and then starting to propagate native trees for subsequent planting along the stream bank.

In what ways did this kit develop understanding of the cultural significance of water in Te Ao Māori? How the health of our awa sustains life- It is our supermarket.
Te Poutama syndicate from Waikanae School have used our awesome equipment to test our stream that runs through our school and we are all geared up to visiting our local awa to compare the results! Students have been so excited to use the equipment (especially the periscope) and have their fingers crossed to find some ‘critters’ at the bigger river. This is an AWESOME kit!! THANK YOU!!

In what ways did this kit develop understanding of the cultural significance of water in Te Ao Māori? The kit allowed us to see how the water way provided so many different purposes for people, food, water etc.
We really enjoyed the opportunity to use the school kit in our local environment. We had completed stream studies at a stream closer to school before but this kit allowed us to explore further. It worked really well and was engaging for 40 students to participate at one time. We enjoyed at the test you could complete. Thank you!

In what ways did this kit develop understanding of the cultural significance of water in Te Ao Māori? The kit helped to support the idea that water health is significant and important in the life and health of all that surrounds it. We have worked with the Mauri Compass previously and it was interesting to see how students use the data that they collected
This kit was so well put together and so well resourced. It was fantastic to have our students explore the kit as intended and then see them use items from the kit to formulate their own investigations. In the time between getting the kit and now, students have used it almost daily as support for other learning and as it prompted further inquiry. The set up of the support really helped me to scaffold the students learning, the measurement olympics was a great hit and something that we have returned to, taken ideas from and adapted to support further learning in measurement in our class. Last year we tested our rivers and collected data using the enviroshools rivers and us kit, we had a body of data to compare our new results with and the methods varied slightly providing lots of opportunity for critical discussion which I think that the kids really benefited from. This kit helped us to provide some foundational skills which we have drawn on in other learning areas.

In what ways did this kit develop understanding of the cultural significance of water in Te Ao Māori? Students could articulate the importance of water as essential for all living things. Relating the health of Papatuanuku is needed for us and living things to be well. Clean water is essential for our wellbeing Hauora
The kit was comprehensive. Included everything we needed to study our local stream. Often local waterways can be overlooked. Now the students are talking about what makes a healthy waterway. The only aspects I would change is providing a longer periscope to assess water clarity more easily and that providing larger images of the different types of periphyton. Overall the kit was able to be picked up and used. The students were able to make observations, compare their findings and think of further ideas to study. They are keen to repeat the experiments each term to look for trends or differences.

In what ways did this kit develop understanding of the cultural significance of water in Te Ao Māori? We are studying Water as our Term Three inquiry topic and this activity will be the amazing part (and Tikanga) to show the importance of healthy waterways. We linked this topic to Matariki from the first week of the term.
This kit looks good but it is an immense amount of work to complete, and will require fine weather (which obviously hasn't happened yet in an Otago Winter) I have contacted DairyNZ and am waiting to hear back from their educator, regarding potential assistance in this. We will use this in Spring. It has some great resources in the kit. But until it is warmer our RAMs don't allow us to have children standing in streams/creeks during Winter, much as we would love to
