In what ways did this kit develop understanding of the cultural significance of water in Te Ao Māori? The learners had never considered the importance of mountains and the water. Now have a greater understanding of cultural significance and what it means to them as well.
Really well set out kit, lots of learning for the children (and teachers)! Great ideas and easy to follow process. The children loved the scientific tools provided and when the kit was introduced, wondered what everything could be used for. It inspired a group of learners to want to know more about waterways throughout NZ.

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? As a teacher I have been able to bring in many areas of the curriculum. Reading School Journals about our Pepeha and river pollution and how to monitor rivers. Writing, the children have written letters home explaining what we are doing and why. They hav

What opportunities have arisen for future learning from this kit? I hope to extend the learning we have done with the streams to other environmental areas, the ocean, forests etc looking at the environmental affects of pollution in general and how we can help.

In what ways did this kit develop understanding of the cultural significance of water in Te Ao Māori? It allowed the to children to recognise the importance of looking after our waterways not just for cultural reasons but for the needs of everyone, either for food, recreation or biodiversity. Many of them did not know how significant water was culturally.
A great kit that offers some many different learning opportunities for the children. Although we are yet to do our actually testing yet due to Covid, the children are really excited about all the different things we have been able to do so far

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? Our literacy this term has been environmental science to connect with this kit. So many links with science and maths.

In what ways did this kit develop understanding of the cultural significance of water in Te Ao Māori? Great to link the kit to the importance of water in our identity as kiwis.
We haven't had time to go on our river trip yet but have it all planned for Week 7 this term. Our students enjoyed the activities leading up especially the science and looking at the invertebrates. We have based all our literacy around this topic this term. I will add photos to the facebook page when we go on our trip.

What an exiting kit this has been for our students. They have enjoyed the hands on investigations that they got to do in the stream. I am confident that students now know what the types of tests are that can be conducted to determine the quality of a steam. They have also made progress as to why it is important to keep our streams healthy. Thank you for this awesome kit, it was a pleasure to be a part of this.

This has hands down been the best school kit we have ever done. The class were so engaged. After doing all the prep in class we spent a day out running our tests at two different streams in our community. We found significant differences in the health of the two streams, which opened up so many conversations about the things that impact our local waterways. We were luck to be joined on our trip by a member of the community who works for Greater Wellington City Council, looking at our water, as well as a local iwi leader who helped contextualise the importance of water for Māori. They were both blown away by the opportunity this kit gave our kids. We feel very luck to have been given the chance to really examine the impact and causation of water health in our own backyard. Awesome. Thank you!

This kit has been so awesome to use and the kids have been loving the hands-on learning that it provides! After using the kit to investigate our drinking water in class, and the creek nearby our school, the kids have decided that they want to try and improve our school's water quality. We are planning to use this kit and all its great resources throughout the rest of the year. This was one of the best kits to date!

Our class had a lot of fun testing the health of our stream. We planned our visit carefully, drawing up a 'map' of our site to identify where we wanted to test to ensure we covered all areas of the stream. We knew our stream wasn't going to be too healthy, but it seems it is worse than we thought. We only found 2 worms, despite looking very carefully. We managed to gather most of the temperatures we needed, before the thermometer took a dunk in the water and stopped working and the periscope leaked, making it hard to measure the clarity, but luckily we had enough info to make a judgement! We got some great photos and have a fantastic display in the class of our data! The next stage is for use to figure out some actions we can take to try and improve the health of the stream. We have already planned to plant along the stream edge some time this term and will hopefully test again in the future to see if we have had any positive impacts! A great kit and we would use it again!

My year 8 class loved having the opportunity to do 'real' science. We visited the Mangarata Stream at the base of the Hakarimata Range. One of the things that made the students feel like real scientists was the provision of the equipment like the periscope and thermometer. It was a brilliant opportunity to integrate a lot of different curriculum areas: maths, technology, science and social sciences; providing a very relevant context for students to apply their learning. We are now keen to conduct more testing in some other areas and compare the results between different waterways, possibly identifying a stream we could adopt as an ongoing project.
