We were able to link this in with our planned inquiry about Wai (why) Water- the Resources were engaging and the students liked the qr codes for songs. Thank you for the resources/plan full of ideas to support engagement with our whānau and ākonga around the very precious resource of water.

We had a great time exploring our water use as a Year 4-6 class. The students in Marton have a good appreciation of the need to conserve water and how it feels to have water that is not always up to standard. This kit helped the kids to focus on little habits they could teach others and they loved earning their water badges after completing their water savings tracker for homework. We extended the study to look at the volume of water used around the school and found that not all flushes or taps use the same volume. This kit also linked well to our nutrition unit and the students were a lot more enthusiastic about water after discussing how bad many fizzy drinks are for you. It was scary to find out how many fizzy drinks these students were drinking, but Marton water is disgusting to drink or smell so I do understand why.

This was a great unit to do as a syndicate. The whole Year 7 and 8 cohort completed this together. We focussed on communicating arguments from a social science perspective. The students learnt how to use social science conventions to communicate and advocate for saving water. We continued our studies to a global view and our students became Worldwide Water experts. They then created a fun news report about their chosen country(guided). This unit was able to integrate writing, reading, oral language and visual language skills.

What was the impact of the daily stamping practice in your classroom and which water benchmark did your students find most fascinating? Students like the action of being able to do this and again having this on the wall was a good reminder for the students. The students had a sense of competitiveness (unintentionally) around saving water and this activity encourgaed discussions around savinf water.

Students had a genuine interest in the water savers kit. It was relevant to them so they found it interesting. They enjoyed seeing their water cycle (bags) on the window each day and it was a good reminder to refer back to when talking about the water cycle.
