We recently rented a car from Goldcar and hadn’t checked their reviews beforehand. If we had done, we wouldn’t have rented from them.
Upon collection I pointed out damage to the vehicle that wasn’t on the forms. The Goldcar rep told me there was a problem with the system and he couldn’t update it but ‘it would be fine’ when we dropped it off. I insisted he manually drew the damage on the paperwork and stamped it with the company’s stamp which he reluctantly did.
Upon drop-off they tried to tell me I’d caused the damage (m hut thankfully I was able to show them the paperwork.
It was only when I was sat on the plane waiting to come home that I received an email with a bill for £800 which said ‘excess mileage’.
Our mileage allowance over the ten days we had the car was 1200km - they were claiming we’d driven 3500km.
I called and emailed explaining this was implausible, I’d been on holiday and had driven no more than 300 miles as most of the trip is been sat at the pool at my hotel. Nevertheless, they rejected this and said the charge stood.
I’m now having to go through my bank to reclaim the money.
I’ve rented cars for 20 years and though I always ensure damage is clearly recorded at pickup, I’ve never once thought to look at mileage recorded on the paperwork. Beware- this company is cheaper than all the others for a reason.
