“When setting up the pieces, the board lights up like a Christmas tree. It has a hard time knowing if the piece is there or not, and flashes even though the piece is on the square. Some pieces/spaces detect better than others but itβs hard playing a game of chess when the board is flashing rapidly.”
“A decent quality board, gets out of sync easily and the app doesn't work very well. Considering the app drives the experience it really is limited to how well it works. Has potential but until they improve the app and online experience it is just an expensive board that you can play the computer with”
“to be honest I'm pretty disappointed first of all I thought your product will be able to link to chess.com second I'm experiencing some bugs such as application crashes sometimes I'm not able to establish a game especially on chessup
etc etc ...
I'm disappointed.”
Hi Dror!
We are so close to releasing chess.com integration for everyone! It's out in the wild for Android Beta! However, someone will be reaching out to your shortly, we want to make sure that your experience with your ChessUp is world class!
“I'm in the UK and was told that I could expect to receive the board before Christmas. I have emailed three times between then - 28th Dec, 4th Jan and 9th Jan - and I am still yet to hear back about where my board has got to! I'm afraid the Royal Mail strikes are no longer any excuse for delays...
The team have otherwise been very responsive via email with a handful of my email questions about their product prior to the product completion, but not since then.
Additionally, it seems like the team are receptive to ongoing development and have secured backing from professional chess players willing to showcase the board on YouTube - I'm keen to see how it grows... but I'd like the board I backed via Kickstarter all the way back in June 2021!”
Hi Jas,
I've raised your particular issue with the fulfillment team.
You should be contacted by them with more info shortly.
Thanks for your understanding,
Patrick
“Astounding that a $400 dollar game doesn't even include a charger (only a cable) to use the set. And then, you can only fully enjoy the game if you have a late model smart phone or tablet, laptops not welcome to use the app. Very disappointed and shame on Lori for backing this difficult to use, over-priced computer chess set. For 1/5th the price, iCore will sell me a much better one. Waisted money.”
Hi Jeff,
We're sorry ChessUp has not lived up to your expectations. We are working hard on getting the Android app to support more smartphone models and avoid the issues you mention.
Thanks,
Patrick

“Not satisfied with the lack of attention, effort to address lighting which can assist those with color blindness. With the majority of my family being inflicted with this, as it currently stands, the LED configuration, is completely useless.
If Hudson Soft figured it out by 2007, so can you.”
“We are struggling to try to learn how to just play too over the board. It doesn't seem to be straightforward on identifying the two players so we haven't really been able to use the full capabilities of the product.”
Hi there!
If you could be more specific with the issue you face, we'd be happy to help.

“The chess set isn't working properly. We were told to try to fix it ourselves which doesn't seem appropriate given the cost of the product. Now we need to determine how to send it in to be repaired or ideally, replaced.”
“The materials were decent but the operation was poor. Approx 1 in 5 games ended in board errors where a random light or lights would come on & not go off; game would freeze under these circumstances. Saving games is iffy, worked less than half the time; saving should be auto (my opinion) or indicator light should be unique to square, maybe red since that would not be used for normal play so user is sure game saved. Board should be capable of better play without app; good avg. club player would run around 1500, board level seems about 1200 max. Using app was very buggy (other reason wished lone board was better), quit shortly after receiving. Since my issues are firmware/software based it is my hope that the issues I encountered get repaired and the board will perform as stated.”

“While the board, the pieces, and the carry bag are all very nice, the Android version of the app is unreliable at best, and to be honest, when I ordered this 2 years ago I was playing a lot of chess and thought this would help improve my otb game. Now I don't play much anymore and I don't think this board will change that.”
Hi Daniel,
thanks for your review! We are aware of issues with the Android app and are working non-stop to get them fixed.
Thanks for your understanding!
“The board itself works and is nice, but the promised software falls completely flat. The main draw of this purchase to me was the prospect of playing online via Lichess. I honestly cannot recommend this board unless you are only going to play OTB.”
“The ChessUp board is a revolutionary idea, I was very excited to be a part of the first to get them. However, there are some things that I feel are a short fall so far.
1. The board is quite sensitive in a sense where I don't even touch pieces before they light up, causing the board to glitch out.
2. The board does not recognise the unique pieces, if you set the board up wrong it still recognises the wrong piece as the correct one. So you can play a pawn as a queen and vice versa.
3. The are features that we're promised on the app that are not available yet, not being ungrateful, but most backers have waited 2 years for this product and for it not to be fully ready is disappointing.
4. I feel like the integration between board and phone is currently lack luster, the app often recognises the wrong battery level and when you look at a past game or try and reset the pieces on the board it freaks out and you have to restart the board more than once to resolve it.
Now some pros
1. The pieces feel great, they're the right weight and feel and comparable to much higher quality pieces
2. The idea of the ChessUp board is very much present and exciting
Overall, plenty of things to work on, but also things to be proud of. I he no doubt this will be a household product in the future π”
“Not being used much at the moment as it appears quite glitchy
Game suddenly stops in the middle of a game and cannot continue
Not sure if this is firmware or software problem”
