“Not thrilled with these replacement lenses. The polarization is limited to a narrow strip down the center of the lenses- the top and bottom of the lenses have a broad margin non-polarization, it’s horribly noticeable and is a distraction while driving. Additionally, looking at my cell phone while wearing the lenses is extremely distorted. I’m replacing 580g glass costa lenses. My cheap $40 back up sunglasses from academy sports display none of these issues. My previous costa lenses were scratched or else I would request them to be put back in. New tajima lenses are terrible in lower light conditions on the water in comparison to the costa blue lenses they replaced. Thought these based on a their troutbitten sponsorship(commercial) and would not recommend to anyone.”
Hi Don,
Thanks for taking the time to share your feedback, though it sounds like there may be some misunderstandings about the lenses and how polarized optics work.
To clarify:
All of our lenses are 100% polarized with 99.9% polarizing efficiency across the entire lens — there’s no such thing as polarization only in the center strip. What you're likely seeing is the interaction between the polarized lenses and other polarized surfaces (like your car windshield or phone screen), which can create visual patterns or effects. That’s common across all premium polarized lenses, including Costa.
As for distortion, our lenses are optically cast using a patented urethane process and are among the clearest available. Any "distortion" you're noticing is almost certainly the result of polarizing filter interaction, not optical quality.
Finally, the lenses you received match the original 580G in tint color, mirror coating, and light transmission. The only difference is lens material — ours are impact-resistant and lightweight urethane rather than heavy glass. The performance in lower light may feel different simply due to the material or coating preferences, but it’s not a result of reduced quality or polarization.
We always want our customers to be happy, but we also want to make sure the information shared is accurate. If you'd like to return the lenses, we're happy to walk you through the process.
Best regards,
Jacob
“The service and communication was exceptional! The replacement lenses, though, have a little distortion when looking thru them. I have an identical pair of Maui Jim glasses with the same color lens, and vision is perfect. I'll just keep them as a backup pair. Tried getting used to them by wearing them for a week, but I can't. Sorry I can't give a better review, as I've never given a bad one before.”
Hi Terrell, thank you for your feedback, and we're happy to hear you enjoyed the service and communciation. As for the lenses having distortion, that's very odd as our lenses feature no distortion as proven through our material's optical lab testing. However, something must be odd here so we've reached out to ask if you'd send them back so we can inspect and make you a new pair!
