I don't know, my course of Jonathan Yeo's portrait painting doesn't start until the end of January so I am in no position to give a review

I had hoped for more detailed skills training about how to use studio lights for portrait photography to create different effects. I felt that this was rather glossed over. I feel that the course was directed towards young people who have almost no knowledge of how the camera works, or towards others who are hoping to go professional. And so I think it fell between two stools. As an older amateur photographer who has used film, DSLR and now mirrorless and phone cameras for over 40 years (including darkroom and modern digital editing skills) there was not a lot for me to learn on the technical side. However, for me, the crucial learning point was the importance of connecting with your subject/model, if you hope to achieve a meaningful image that means something to the model, yourself as the photographer, and potentially to a wider audience. I found the interviews with other professional photographers very interesting and I appreciate having gained an insight into Rankin's collaborative way of working. This was heart-warming, as there are rather too many photographers who are exploitative in how they achieve their images.

Not as good as the BBC said it would be

I've been really enjoying the course, but have got to lesson #9 and cannot access it. You seem to want me to purchase it again. Lesson 9 is where Tim Spector really starts to explain what to do, so I've only heard the background so far

Hi Mary, Thanks for your review. I'm sorry to hear you're having issues accessing a lesson! I'd like to get this fixed for you. So that I can help, can you let me know what device you're watching the course on and the browser you are using? Best, Rebecca

Not as informative as I had hoped and the annual membership doesn’t have that many courses to choose from - although the price wasn’t too bad with a discount applied. Had I paid full price I would have been disappointed

Pretty elementary. Some interesting information.

Disappointed and disillusioned by the 2nd online course I purchased.. Having enjoyed the 1st course which was full of explanations, advice, exercises and suggested research to encourage and teach how to write children’s books. The 2nd course was simply a history of graphic design and a resume of the person’s career. This is not what I have come to expect from BBC Maestro and ask that you refund my money asap

Very limited number of courses. What is there is good, but theres not much of it. Not worth the subscription- even with 40% off

The courses I have watched are excellent but the app is very frustrating and not user friendly at all. If the developers could make it more like Audible it would be much better. For example; downloads that stay downloaded in your library instead of needing to repeatedly download every time, choice of audio download or video download, proper menu and search function, a favourites function for lessons, 30 second skip back function in the player. I would not pay full price for Maestro unless they can resolve the app because it is a real barrier to consistently accessing the content. It is worth it when they do half price offers though.

I was underwhelmed by BBC Maestro (I signed up because I was interested in the writing courses, and to like the writing courses you need to be a novice, which I am not). I enjoyed Jancis Robinson's wine course, but was not inspired by the cooking courses (another passion). However, my interest was reignited by Rankin's very good photography course. I like that he interviews other photographers (and inspired I've spent a small fortune on new books) and after years of shying away from portrait photography, I feel now sufficiently inspired to try.

I have not been able to watch BBC Maestro as much as I would like because I watch most of my content on a smart TV and there is no TV app for either iOS or Android. I am restricted to using a browser. There doesn't even seem to be a way of casting your phone/tablet to an Android TV.

There are some wonderful teachers/professionals who are at the top of their game and it is always nice to hear from British industry leaders all under one roof. I've especially loved Lee Childs course on writing and my kids and I are working through David Walliams course on writing for children. My only gripe is the content doesn't quite match up to the likes of Masterclass especially the depth of content per chapter. The courses are good for a beginner wanted a holistic view of the subject but if you want a real insight on how to 'write a novel', for example, there isn't enough detail to competently do so with any of your courses.

The lessons that a present are great, but there is very limited choice compared to similar services. The interface needs some work with a very small player unless maximised to fill the screen (not ideal if you want to make notes). Overall if it's worth the yearly cost if there is a specific lesson you want to take, but there isn't enough to justify a renewal right now.
