In 1795 Thomas Jaques took on his 15-year-old son, John as an apprentice. Together they established ‘Thomas Jaques: Manufacturer of Ivory, Hardwoods, Bone and Tunbridge Ware’ in Hatton Garden. We have remained a family run business ever since, with the same unwavering passion for quality games and toys.

Today we are ever-expanding our toy range and have been honoured with over 10 awards in the past five years as a result. Our Mini Minds Hub launched in 2020 to encourage learning at home. This is now stocked with over 150 free resources. We’ve been working for over 230 years to fill the world with more joy and we hope to keep striving for that goal long into the future. “I bought this chess set as a gift for someone who just got into chess.What to expect for 30? Well, I wasnt expecting anything spectacular, but I never considered that the pieces would be made so cheaply that they were super lightweight, so you end up knocking them over all the time.Not a great experience as a product marketed as an entry level gift.”

“The pieces are well designed yet have this big clunky style to them. The board is also welldesigned, but I hate that the two sides dont align properly when you set it up.”

“This chess set would be great gift if they could just address the quality control issues. The board itself was good quality, nicely designed and packaged well.Unfortunately some of the chess pieces knights and rooks were poorly crafted and didnt look good quality. I saw this in other reviews but hoped they mightve fixed the issues. Unfortunately, for this reason I cannot recommend the product until the manufacturing quality issues are resolved.”
