About Jaques of London:
In 1795 Thomas Jaques took on his 15-year-old son, John as an apprentice. Together they established ‘Thomas Jaques: Manufacturer of Ivory, Hardwoods, Bone and Tunbridge Ware’ in Hatton Garden. We have remained a family run business ever since, with the same unwavering passion for quality games and toys.

Today we are ever-expanding our toy range and have been honoured with over 10 awards in the past five years as a result. Our Mini Minds Hub launched in 2020 to encourage learning at home. This is now stocked with over 150 free resources. We’ve been working for over 230 years to fill the world with more joy and we hope to keep striving for that goal long into the future. “Its not a great chess set, but its not a badone either. Yes, some of the pieces arent perfect and there was a slight chip on the the folding corner but for a beginner as my 6 year old is he says chess mate! the size of the pieces are perfect, and the time which we will have together learning him and my daughter when she is old enough will be priceless. Maybe a little bit pricey if the beginner could trash the thing, but what comes with Chess is respect, and that also comes with learning the game.”

“The quality of the set was much more superior than what I was expecting. Based on the price and some past reviews I read, I was expecting an inferior quality product. It was not like that at all. The packing was impeccable. Once I open it up, I was presented with a beautifully built real wood foldable chess board, with all the pieces carefully stored within. The attention to the details blew my mind. The smell of wood is also amazingly good. I simply loved it. I feel Ive got so much more than what Ive paid for.”

“Fantastic product and feels special despite the comparatively affordable price. One small issue is the weight of each piece is relatively light so the pieces can be knocked over with the lightest touch. Other than that the set is beautifully presented!”

“Excellent packaging for this, with a nice touch of a hand signed note from the packer. Board is well made and hinges and alignment are spot on. Peices are nicely detailed and felt backing feels like its not going anywhere. Had one knight that had a little spur on it, but with each peice being hand carved its no big issue, plus easily trimmed off. Overall, a great value set.”

“Ive been looking for a nice chess set for a while but they were either cheap and plasticky or really expensive. This one was recommended by someone who had already bought one, and its perfect. A beautiful wooden set, well made and presented. I love the way the pieces are stored in the folding board while still being solid and substantial when set up for play. It also arrived beautifully packaged. Highly recommended.”
