About Jaques of London:
In 1795 Thomas Jaques took on his 15-year-old son, John as an apprentice. Together they established ‘Thomas Jaques: Manufacturer of Ivory, Hardwoods, Bone and Tunbridge Ware’ in Hatton Garden. We have remained a family run business ever since, with the same unwavering passion for quality games and toys.

Today we are ever-expanding our toy range and have been honoured with over 10 awards in the past five years as a result. Our Mini Minds Hub launched in 2020 to encourage learning at home. This is now stocked with over 150 free resources. We’ve been working for over 230 years to fill the world with more joy and we hope to keep striving for that goal long into the future. “Wanted a chess set to take on holiday that was big enough to make playing enjoyable but not too bulky and definitely not plastic! This set is ideal lovely wood finish the wooden pieces, while light, are good to handle. Very portable as all the pieces fit inside with elastic holders so they dont rattle around. Good value for money”

“When it came I was greatly impressed with the packaging, exceptional! Great craftmanship and looked and felt like a product worth a lot more than 30 pounds!! Looks wonderful on our coffee table and great to play. The only criticism would be that 3 of the chess pieces are slightly wobbly when sitting on the board. But thats a minute criticism really!!Would definately buy again !”

“Some figurines dont stand straight because of how low the quality is of the cloth glued to the bottom. Overall it pretends to be a premium product, but the only thing premium is the price.”

“Had the chess set delivered on time, the packaging looked really impressive and my sons was equally impressed for whom I bought it. Once opened we were extremely happy with its general presentation and the quality was excellent. The board was solid and beautifully varnished and the chess pieces were impressively carved, overall after we finished our first game we felt we purchased a quality product and my son was very happy with the whole package.”

“Pros * Lovely packaging, would make a very good gift * Overall look is quite nice. Would look good as a display piece on your coffee table.Cons * As with other reviewers, the dark pieces have mismatched colours. The dark King and Bishop in isolation look like theyre on opposing sides see the photo * Board had a couple of blemishes on it * The squares dont quite line up between the two folding halves * Biggest problem was its not comfortable to play actual games on most of the pieces wobble and dont sit flush against the board. After a couple of games I gave up, and have returned it. I bought a 10 plastic magnetic set and its much easier to play on.”

“UPDATED original product supplied was disappointing quality and communication with Jaques took a while because the world was in lockdown however they showed a sincere apology and a genuine desire to satisfy, and sent a replacement set which is just perfect. Well made, attractive and a pleasure to play with. Thanks”
