“I avoided getting Red or Black Stars because I didn't think they were anything special. I picked up 1 of each at a re-homing event for someone moving to Hawaii and they turned out to be fabulous hens! Terrific layers and so friendly. My Red Star learned to come into my kitchen through the doggy door. I would turn around and there she would be looking at me and asking, "Are you in your cooooop?"”
“My two girls, Gertrude and Nicki, are definite ‚Äúegg laying machines‚Äù. They lay nearly every day and their eggs are a huge medium brown. They are very friendly and have a great personality. I‚Äôll be getting more if this breed when I expand my flock!”
“What a wonderful breed. She was a surprise in our Brown Layer Assortment and wish we had gotten more than one! Our girl, Poppy, is our friendliest hen. She often follows us around, loves to be picked up and petted and even tries to sneak inside our house! I swear she even plays with my five year old! On top of all those wonderful attributes, shes an excellent layer! She was the first to start laying and has laid one gorgeous dark brown egg everyday since.”
“I couldnt find our beloved Red Star hen, Ginger. I expected the worse like coyote, raccoon, weasel or whatever. We had basically gave up looking. Then whilst tending to pigpen in barn I noticed her pretty head sticking out of some loose timothy hay in manger watching us quietly. Excited she wasnt gone I moved the hay around her and started counting 11 eggs. Its a little late in year to have babies but for her if she wants to be a mommy so bad we can provide a heat lamp for her if necessary. I was unaware these type of chickens were setters.”
“We ordered 15 all of them arrived super healthy and friendly! Some of them started laying at 17 weeks! Crazy!
We love our older comets and went with them again! Lay almost every day! Friendly to the extreme...they will get up under our feet if not careful!
GREAT for beginning back yarders!”
