“Out of an order of six hens and two roosters, I have five and three. I also had 32 chicks of other breeds. Half of the silked easter eggers developed pasty butt compared to only one chick of the other breeds. They were plenty lively and and after the pasty butt cleared up, as healthy as could be.
They hang out with the other chickens during daylight hours but prefer to sleep with each other on the floor of the coop in a fluffy pile rather than on the roosts with the other chickens, although sometimes they will nap on the roosts during the day.
They have matured at about the same rate as my heavy breeds. At 20 weeks old, three pulets are the same size as my Sussex pullet and the three roosters are slightly smaller than my Sussex rooster but bigger than my Spitzhauben roosters. Two pullets are petite, a bit smaller than my Spitzhauben pullets.
All of them have lovely fluffy beards and muffs. One rooster does not have a crest. The other roosters and two pullets have normal correct silkie crests (the crest does not block vision), and three pullets have the big round puffball crests that block their vision. One pullet is clean-legged. Two pullets only have a thin line of fluff down their legs, and the rest are all feather-legged. One pullet has green legs and beak while the others all have the dark blueish legs and beak. All have dark skin and mulberry to dark purple combs, turquoise earlobes, and bright white, fluffy silkie feathers. There is a mix of silkie style walnut combs, single or pea combs, and one rooster has what looks like three small single combs, the center blade slightly taller. There is quite a mix of features but the overall impression is 'big silkie'.
They are allowed to free-range daily and have thrived. They do have access to feed at all times so I don't know how they would do if they had to forage for 100% of their food. The ones with crests that block vision need to have the crests trimmed so they can see to find edible morsels, not get lost, and see potential predators.
I don't go out of my way to have tame chickens- I let them be for the most part. Two of the pullets are extremely friendly, constantly underfoot, and one of those loves climbing onto my lap for a cozy nap if I sit down. Two pullets are flighty (the two smallest). One pullet and all three roosters are relaxed, but not interested in people, they will come up to take treats but back off to avoid being touched.
They get along well with everyone but do not stand up to bully chickens. Bullies cannot be kept with these gentle birds. When they are let out to range in the mornings, the entire flock is full of excitement, but the silked easter eggers take it to the next level, running in bursts alternated with spinning in circles.
At 20 weeks, they still are still too young to lay so I can't comment on egg color. Even if I ended up with all white/tinted layers I wouldn't be disappointed because these are very nice birds, healthy, beautiful, and amusing.”
“We love our silk easter egger. She is so sweet and loves to be pet. She has a silkie disposition and look but can roost and flutter like the other hens. Please add different colors. So glad we got her.”
“I love my baby, Goose! She‚Äôs larger than a silkie but still smaller than my other hens. She is sweet tempered albeit cautious because she can‚Äôt see well through her poofy feathers. She gets lost in the yard a lot because she can‚Äôt see straight forward unless it‚Äôs been raining. She is fluffy and looks mostly like a straight silkie. She is seven months and laid her first egg today! It is a small green/olive colored one. It doesn‚Äôt really have any blueish tones. Most similar to my olive egger eggs. My only regret is that is didn‚Äôt get two. I thought it would be fine because she‚Äôs larger than a silkie. However, she gets picked on constantly and is an outcast. I feel so bad for her. In the spring I will get a few more of this breed so she‚Äôs not alone. Definitely recommend this breed as long as you get more than one! Watching them will make you laugh and have everyone smiling. She is everyone‚Äôs favorite chicken of my 7!”
“I ordered 3 silkie mixed with the Easter eggers all girls . Well so I thought! turned out one is a rooster which I was fully refunded for the mistake and great customer service! The girls and our mister are our first chickens so we are super happy with them. All 3 are super fluffy and white fur like . They are friendly and my kids treat them like if they were dogs . So these chickens are our pets! Today they are 15 weeks old and they are truly the sweetest. our mister is not a loud one so we will keep him as long as the neighbors aren‚Äôt upset with him (we live in the city and a rooster is not really allowed). As to eggs I truly hope we get colored eggs since it‚Äôs mixed with an Easter egger, however it is too soon to tell. Today I ordered 3 more chicks but not silkies so we hope that they all will get along really well when it‚Äôs time to live together .”
“I‚Äôm new to chickens and I got one hen of this chick, a creme legbar and an Partridge egger They are all so beautiful! Only five weeks so nothing I can say about eggs but honestly I do t care about egg coloring I just love the chicks I can just sit and watch them and it helps my anxiety and stress. She is now starting to come up to me more on her own.. loving it. The other two are beautiful as well, although now I don‚Äôt know which is which they look alike although one has a fluffier head? Anyway I love them.. my only worry is since I have a mixture of chicks (also have 2 Orpington and 2 jersey giants) I wonder what is going to always be the right food.. currently on medicated starter.”
“Im so happy with all my chickens I purchased almost 7 mo ago! All my Moran's lay the most beautiful range of speckled brown eggs since their 6 mo hatch day. Today my White Easter Eggers laid beautiful mint green eggs!”
