How did the kit components encourage mathematical thinking for your students? It demanded logical thinking on their behalf. How to measure, record accurately and decipher whether a record had been created, if it was valid and how to record it.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? We found this unit provided opportunities for our children to negotiate, collaborate, take turns, lead, follow instructions and work alongside children they may otherwise not work with. Many different opportunities for us as teachers to help facilitate relationship skills have arisen from this unit.

What are three words that describe the activities in this kit? Fun, engaging, challenging

What was the most unique record achieved and why? Furtherest hoola hoop roll with your right hand while sitting facing backwards on a chair. This was a really entertaining activity and one that offered the most variation in results from 30 cm to 15m.

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? For our children it was mostly around relationships and how they respond to each other when giving commands or instructions and how they used initiative or problem solved when things didn't go as planned.

“What an exciting unit to finish our term. Alongside watching new Olympic records be created, the children enjoyed creating their own records and challenging each other to see who would be the syndicate record holder. Initially, some of the activities the children had created weren't able to be completed by their peers, so this in itself was a great learning curve as they had to adjust and reassess how they could make it achievable whilst still making it fun.”

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? It would be good to continue the world record aspect, the students seemed to be really interested in this part

What was the most unique record achieved and why? lots of them included food, which made it more interesting for everyone

“The class really enjoyed the kit, it had a good amount of fun included so it kept them interested and hooked. The teaching plans were easy to access and use.”

What are three words that describe the activities in this kit? Hands on, open for creativity and at hand. Discussions about fairness.

What was the most unique record achieved and why? I am not sure about unique, but they were very interested in skipping. However this generated many discussions about the skipping rope vessel itself and then the rope turners.

“DIY Records brought great hands on learning to the class. They were able to think creatively about how records are made and what fun events they could come up with. The kit enabled work in measurement with the equipment to hand. The class were able to create some statistical analysis etc”

How did the kit components encourage mathematical thinking for your students? Firstly the were able to share thinking, discuss medium, modes and averages. They were able to calculate with intent and record findings in a variety of forms and platforms.

“This kit was sensational for engaging learners and seamlessly connected learning to the Olympic Games. The students were highly motivated to participate and delve into the activities. The particularly loved the video clips and recordings of their best times and attempts for activities they helped to create and co-create.”

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? Writing and Physical Education

“I loved having the DIY world record kit to teach how Olympic sports are created, the extent of organisating the sport and how world record holders come to be. The use of the kit helped to ensure students understood how to accuractely measure events and decide of winners. I added videos and slides to front load learning oportunities before using the kit. All students were excited and fully engaged to complete tasks and compete in their chosen sports. Our class created our own ideas for class records and completed 5 different competitions.”
