“Kids in my class loved doing a daily challege and getting a chance each day to see if they could bet the number they got (badge number) it was something they got a chance to make choices.”

How did the kit components encourage mathematical thinking for your students? They didnt even realise they were doing maths to begin with! It gave them real life applications to use. They got curious about answers and persevered to find answers.

How did the kit components encourage mathematical thinking for your students? It was really interesting to see students understanding of estimating and visualising length, height and time, as well as connecting units to types of measurement to specific activities

What was the most unique record achieved and why? The most french words spoken in a minute. This was designed by a child who is taking french lessons outside of school, but she didn't realise that she wouldn't be able to participate in her own record so she spent her lunchtimes teaching as many words as she could to others

“I found this resource a great way to incorporate student ideas into our practices for athletics day this year. We split into 3 groups. 1 group running thier own stations, 1 group visiting teacher led stations and 1 group visiting student led stations”

How did the kit components encourage mathematical thinking for your students? The idea of measurability was challenging for some students. Being explicit in their instructions included how to measure, mostly length and time.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? We tied this in with the Olympics. Students realised there was a big difference between competing at a sporting competition and creating Guiness World Record.ion

“My kids enjoyed this kit. Creating the tasks was easy once they understood the language that was needed. Students became very competitive over some of the challenges while some of the challenges did not work because the creators had not thought it out clearly. Failure or success it was all important learning. The chaos of the competitions was followed with a presentation of badges for winning a record.”

How did the kit components encourage mathematical thinking for your students? We had to engage in lots of measuring and multipicative thinking whilst developing and recording our records. Then we had to discuss all the mathematical literacy, high level vocab etc when we made our graphs and looked at patterns within and between our events.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? I will use the kit again for sure. Especially for measurement, the kids were so engaged and it was purposeful to/for them. They also want to explore world records further and find out what drives people to pursue them.

What was the most unique record achieved and why? Arm wrestle whilst singing BINGO. The singing part added a real challenge, my class were actually quite strong, so we had several rounds. The photo is of the final round, it went on for over ten minutes - the boys were trying hard to continue singing, but it ended in a tie

“Such a fun and engaging resorce. The task was completley student driven and really purposeful. Even my most reluctant mathmaticians were engaged and motivated due to it being about them. They were genuinely interested in making a world record. The competiion factor also played a part which gets most kids interested. I loved teaching this kit, it was funny and engaging and the kids were naturally motivated to get into it.”

How did the kit components encourage mathematical thinking for your students? I had to add onto the kit to reach the specific goals I had in mind for my students - we used the results for each record as a data set for our statistics work.
