What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? The letter really made the children aware of how people can be racist - the class had already looked at where their own families had come from and were able to feel/develop empathy for the new immigrants and other nationalities within our own community. How did using art as the context allow your learners to explore the themes of racism and inclusivity? The art being symbolic and with the block prints allowed all children to achieve success and enabled them to focus on the meaning rather than their artistic ability. It also allowed the children who are at the early stages of literacy be able to depict th

How did this kit help your students understanding of art with a purpose? Having the examples and the artist dicuss their work and their own art attempts using their own personal "paper" raised the understanding of this. We are now looking at other art work and wondering if they have meanings too.
The Year 4/5 class were really understanding with the concept of kindness - and it was interesting to see their acknowledgement of lack of inclusivity in some aspects of their lives. They were involved with the poems and having examples and "real" people inspired them. They loved the print making and are excitied about their work being part of Kotahitanga.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Not applicable for our students at this time and in the current setting I work in.
How did using art as the context allow your learners to explore the themes of racism and inclusivity? A difficult concept for our tamariki, they could only really comment-after lots of role play and linking to their own lives of what inclusivity means and how we feel when we are/are not included.

How did this kit help your students understanding of art with a purpose? This group of students grasped the concept at a very superficial level.
Last year Covid impacted our ability to do justice to it. At the end of the year, I suggested that I would return the resource to school kit. This year I have a year 2/3 cohort and based in a multi level room with new entrants to year 3. In term one we were understaffed due to bereavement leave and covid. I attempted to engage the students in the resource in term 2. We found the content difficult for our cohort, we watched the video by We watched the video by Maya Angelou “Be a rainbow in someone else's cloud” and discussed what it meant to them.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? As a teacher I will continue to use parts of the the resources to explore the issue of racism and encourage creative responses. I will use it in art and poetry writing. I am currently working with a new group of students to create another mural.
How did using art as the context allow your learners to explore the themes of racism and inclusivity? We looked at racism and how we can change it through the lens of Street Art/public art. The students responded to their findings and created a mural with a very strong message for change and unity. Art was a great way to explore this topic. Students gaine

How did this kit help your students understanding of art with a purpose? Students were able to be exposed to a wide range of artists' responses to racism. The wide range - poetry, painting, textile art, sculpture.. was eye-opening for many students. Seeing the range of responses made their own response more valuable. Their e
I think the resources in the kit are of very high quality and have led to interesting discussion with my students. The range of resources was excellent and allowed me to use them across several subject areas, therefore approaching the issue of racism, unity/ kotahitanga from many angles. I believe the learning and understanding gained by students is deep and powerful.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? I'm keen to revisit some of the other kits - Not Part of My World and As I Saw It (if that is still available?) to look again now that we have deeper understanding and appreciation of diverse perspectives around us.
How did using art as the context allow your learners to explore the themes of racism and inclusivity? We started with the same stamp print - the circle - and discussed how it was the same but we could make it different through using our own style. The tamariki loved that there was no 'right' way to make the art - there were lots of different interpretatio

How did this kit help your students understanding of art with a purpose? I was a bit dubious but the tamariki seem to have a deeper and more curious attitude to both art and others who have unique stories.
I was so impressed with the way my tamariki could make connections between art being a unique and personal representation that is interpreted differently by different viewers - it really helped us frame the conversation around people being judge by their appearance and how that can become exclusion / racism. The poetry really had an impact once this realisation had occurred.

How did this kit help your students understanding of art with a purpose? It fostered the idea that there is a deep meaning to much of the imagery we are privy to and that art provides are different way to interpret how we feel and the challenges that we face on a daily basis.
The kit was a fantastic way to align our school values in a contextual way that allowed students to actively reflect and act on what Kotahitanga meant to them and their school community. We created an amazing display that displayed a visual representation of our positivity that we could pass on to others who are enter our learning space.

How did this kit help your students understanding of art with a purpose? This kit helped ākonga and their understanding of art with a purpose as it encouraged self-expression and creativity and built confidence as well as a sense of individual and collective identity.
I found the Kotahitanga-United Through Creativity Kit worked in well with our term concept of Tuakiri-Identity with the ākonga using the mahi that they had been working on to represent their identity through art eg creating their own pou.
