In the end, I didn't get to use the kit this term. I really like the concept and the letter is powerful.

The concept of Kotahitanga was used, but the resources provided restricted creativity - we received 5 identical stamps with the kotahitanga logo on it, note pads, and posters. If we had used a stamp, one would have been sufficient. It was a waste of resources. The poster pdf provided were shown on TV, devices so we did not use the hard copy. The lesson was adapted for Y7/8 students in ruumaki and reo rua setting. The Kotahitanga unit used was adapted from the NZC where students had the opportunity to share ideas and experiences relating to Kotahitanga, unity and what it might look like in a classroom environment. Students unpacked the word Kohitanga and what it looks like in Te Ao Maaori. In relation to kowhaiwahi, each pattern represents a form of unity - poutama (success with unity), niho taniwha (how unified caution can help), paatiki (kai, sharing), puuhoro (waka, unified destination and capability to arrive safely). Students were guided to through a process to create symmetrical Maaori kowhaiwahi, and will be exhibited when painting is complete. This unit was used across the curriculum making reference to symmetry, reflection, tessellation in geometry. The Porangi Boy by Shilo Kino was read to compliment this unit. Reference to Kotahitanga in our Inquiry unit NZ Histories was discussed throughout.
