How did this kit help your students understanding of art with a purpose? Even though we had limited time with the kit my students have an understanding that art needs a purpose and it can communicate a strong message.
The kit is a beautiful resource. We made a start on the kit looking at racism - the letter activity, " My Neighbour". My students were engaged with the material. It provoked a few responses about incidences where some of them were bullied because of their race. They thought that the message was very powerful... We had a great discussion. Then Covid-19 happened

How did this kit help your students understanding of art with a purpose? Still under review. We are using this to inspire student inquiries in Term 4 to explore issues that are important to them and encourage the medium of Art to highlight this. Most students are excited to try this. The kit showed that Art was more than just
Good concept - Thought provoking with the students. Found it a little difficult to follow the plan on the website. moving through the different topics. We were using this during Term 3 and had to adapt and change aspects as we moved into lock down. Able to cover the first 2 sections in depth but not the final art piece as we are still away from school.

How did this kit help your students understanding of art with a purpose? Making connections with the experiences of others - and exploring the poetry by creating new ideas from a concept that another person had actioned.
What a truly amazing kit - the depth of discussion and compassion this kit initiated was just awesome. My students particularly enjoyed the found poems - some of them have used the concept on other texts independently. Be the rainbow in somebody’s cloud has become a class mantra! Because of COVID restrictions we have been unable to hold a formal exhibition but we have created a display that students have been able to share with whānau.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? I think I have learned as an educator that children rise when they are given opportunity. Going into lockdown again this year made the content of this topic that much more impacting. It was a positive way to work through the frutrations of lockdown and I
How did using art as the context allow your learners to explore the themes of racism and inclusivity? The 'Be Kind' poems were great because it linked our discussions of race, blame etc and how Chinese people were discriminated against during Covid. There is a Chinese girl in our class and I was interested (and a little nervous) about how this would go, b

How did this kit help your students understanding of art with a purpose? The previous term we had been to Waikato Museum on a school trip, so engaging with art that was going to be on exhibition, there, filled them with a sense of importance. The children were quite humbled by discussing quite mature topics such as racism and
We pushed it into term 3 due to the kit being passed on to me late term two, so I am sorry for the delay. I really enjoyed the discussion and the children got a lot out of the content. It was amazing how the children didn't realise that some comments were racist. They thought some things were just "normal". We connected the Kotahitanga unit to our heritage as well and mapped in the world where our ancestors came from. There was one child who made a comment about children who had ancestry from Germany who said, "I don't like Germans because of that they did in the war." I asked at that point if it was all of Germany's fault for the decisions of a few people almost one hundred years ago and if that country deserves to be not 'liked' for bad decisions in the past. I will always remember the look on this child's face making a shift in their thinking of race. Following this conversation we had many conversations about good and bad things that have happened in the past. The children became more and more open about celebrating differences and connecting over their differences and cultural connections. This was the first kit I have used and I loved the way that the resources (both in the physical kit and online) made teaching this topic enjoyable and engaging for the children.
