How did this kit help your students understanding of art with a purpose? They enjoyed creating their art work and also having the shared purpose of sharing their work with whanau and the community hall.
This was a fantastic kit for really bringing together language and art as well as our values. The children love art and were highly motivated and challenged by the learning in this unit. We have been learning about kaitiakitanga for our Inquiry learning and this unit kotahitanga unit of work sat alongside this so beautifully, to extend our care to all people and things. The conversations we had about racism and prejudice were thoughtful and emotional at times too.

How did this kit help your students understanding of art with a purpose? Students learnt that art and the concept of art is subjective. For some learning how to convey a message - not just a 'picture'.
The kit provided a good scaffold for the teacher to implement a context through art. When trying to think of a way to teach inclusivity through art it was quite overwhelming. THe kit helped with this.

The Kotahitanga kit generated great discussion around identity, inclusivity, acceptance and tolerance. The kit itself was so well resourced, provided quality resources and had a variety of activities that could be easily followed from the plan provided or easily adapted to suit the level of the students being worked with. Below are some comments from my students: I learned about being the change. Being the change means changing your actions and how you see other people. Some people may look different, but at the end of the day, we are all people. Don't look at the outside, see what they are in the heart. The three photos are part of our identity which is special and is nothing we should be ashamed of, don't change a thing about you, instead, just be your." "I learned about being the change. "I think that it was a good change to start learning about more darker topics and being more aware of the world in general, my favourite part about the Kotahitanga unit is that we show our true self and our identity through creativity." The artist's statement that the students wrote for their digital exhibition was very poignant. Fantastic unit - thank you!
