“My class enjoyed some of the stories but found it hard to navigate the dashboard on occasion as they are Y10 and they were working individually on different stories each. They were recording their learning in a way that was new to them also (on google sites) but having the images available digitally helped and the links. Some stories were more difficult than others with a lot of audio clips which were harder to listen to in a busy classroom. Some stories were surprising to the students and they mostly enjoyed the variety of different tasks they came across. Overall I did like using the kit but now having used it, would probably try different approaches to using it in class next time.”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? Good starters to implement our localised curriculum. Teachers got ideas on how to share local purakau using old school photos and articles

“There is so much in this pack that can be used in so many different ways. It has been great to be able to dip in occasionally and use the resources to support the teaching and learning already happening in my class. I have been able to adapt the resources for both Year 7 and Year 10 classes, using the same resource in different ways depending on the class.”

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? It really has flipped the classroom in that students take control of their learning. It changed my ideas about how stories can be told and made it a lot more practical and relevant to the children.

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? Yes! I am going to use this model in our local curriculum for histories. The children particularly loved the location aspect of the cards and the pepeha introduction was inspired.

“This was an invaluable resource. The intricate resources and photographs were amazing. So much effort has been put into collecting and collating artefacts for children to touch and delve into. Quite simply it is something that we as teachers cannot provide. It really makes history come alive. There were a variety of entry points into the kit and it was amazing to see how other teachers used it in the tips on the secret teacher pages in the app.”

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? This kit has given me wings! I feel like I can now confidently deliver great content to my students and I am far from having explored it all.

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? The kit has motivated me to explore the history of my local area by showing me how easily accessible archives are online and how to start an investigation using photos and other artefacts. I found a box of silverplated spoons that were made for the centenary celebration of our kura in the 1980's and have added them to the artefacts kit bag with the intention of using them as starting point for our investigation in the history of our kura.

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? I am more confident in presenting the information to the tamariki and I have also learnt how I can connect students prior knowledge and experiences into my teaching better.

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? Because I am not originally from where I am currently living, there is a lot I want to learn now about PN. I was able to learn more hgistroy about my kura, but I would love to talk to people in the community and use my local resources to find more about this place.

“We used this school kit this term and it was incredible to linkt he knowledge about pepeha/mihimihi that we had learnt at the beginning of this year. The students found the stories very interesting and it was great to learn about some of my students history and their connections to some of the places and their stories they have. The students loved looking at the old items that were included in the kit and we did a session on how things have changed and what the future might look like in another 50 years. This was such a great kit to get the tamariki interested in our whenua and the tangata. Ngā mihi nui School Kit for creating such a thoughtful and exciting kit!”

“This kit is full of information and amazing stories! At times my class (Y4-8) found it overwhelming as there is a lot to unpack and understand. Those who had a real interest loved being able to explore the newspaper articles independently while the others worked with me. I think this kit is best suited for year 6-8 students and used over a few terms.”
