“There was a lot to cover alongside a whole school inquiry. However, the resources and information provided allowed us to work this in collaboratively. We, alongside ākonga have discovered so much throughout this topic and continue to do so, coming up to the last week of term. A user friendly resource that we were able to adapt to suit our ākongfa needs.”

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? We still recognise that we need to increase our own subject knowledge to be able to confidently teach this subject to our students.

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? It's really interesting to hear individual stories and about the lived experience of our communities. We have looked into some more stories of the same cultures to help us get a broader sense of the experience, so our tamariki learn that these were not just one families stories.

What was the impact of knowing the stories in this kit were developed in collaboration with their iwi/whānau/community? This was useful as there are many stories out there in the community and so knowing they have been specifically chosen by people in those communities made us feel confident that the perspectives and viewpoints were reliable.

“We found some really interesting stories and resources within this kit and used some of them to help us when structuring our lessons. While we didn't follow a story all the way through, we were able to use elements of it to help us delve into different communities and their reasons for migrating to Aotearoa. There is so much content in the kit that it really did feel overwhelming initially, and we were lucky that we could have a meeting to help us understand it better. Following that, it did feel more manageable and if we hadn't had that, I'm not sure how comfortable we would have been with using the kit. Our students were actively engaged in the activities we did with them, and they really enjoyed especially being able to see the way that Courtney Place used to look. There were some aspects that we found further resources for and were more appropriate for the learning needs of our class, so we did stray away from following all of the website tasks and sources. Overall, this was really helpful for us to begin creating a structure for part of the new curriculum.”

“This was a great kit that linked in really nicely with our Aoetearoa Histories. It was nice to have some resources from all over NZ and to be able to link in local stories with what we were already learning - the images really hooked the kids.”

“My class thoroughly enjoyed this kit and it was a great unit to support our learning about Aotearoa. This unit was not entirely history-focused, however, it provided a great opportunity for independent research, homework tasks and in-class group work. I found the teacher support material useful and easy to access and follow. I still have work left to do from this kit that we continue with, in term 4.”

“This Kit was a great place to start with my tamariki. They really enjoyed looking at the all the artifacts/pictures and it created lots of kōrero. We located some specific to our area. We also liked looking at the pepeha specific to each artifact/story.”

“This is such an amazing resource that it's hard to do it justice. There's so much on offer. Very in-depth and beautifully created, researched and resourced. The Year 7 felt quite challenged and put off by how sophisticated it is and it took quite a bit to unpack and model this so we did not get to use many of the resources this time around. I would definitely use it again to continue to expose them to this level of thinking, resources and expectations.”

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? I actually feel pretty confident teaching NZ History. It is something that I feel passionate about. But this resource has added another layer of information, ideas and resources.

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? Over the past few years our school has built on quite a comprehensive look into our local History. We are looking forward to looking at ways we could use this model from this kit.
