How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? I felt confident with the backing of an in-depth resource that was created with the voices of the tangata the resource is detailing the history of.

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? I am very interested in the history of our local area, we could extend the inquiry for students to create their own 'postcard' of our area.

What was the impact of knowing the stories in this kit were developed in collaboration with their iwi/whānau/community? This made it feel like it was a culturally responsive resource and I felt like my responsibility to Te Tiriti was not in jeopardy from using the resource.

“Teacher PD - this resource is amazing just to go through as a kaiako and read all of the information. It has taught me a lot about Aotearoa's history and I feel as though it is a considered resource that covers all factors of the events at the time. It includes multiple perspectives and has created some interesting conversation within my teaching team about our history. Even as a PD resource I recommend it! Student use - we have just started using this resource with our students (we will continue it in term 4). We decided to start as a team with Promises and work through this post card together. We have a team of years 5-6 with mixed ability working at all levels of the curriculum from 1-4. We have scaffolded the resource and used kahoot quizzes to make it fun an engaging. It is great to have a range of resources the students can engage with to explore the story of Promises (e.g. videos, audio, reading, images etc). It falls into the UDL framework having multiple ways to receieve information. We are also creating our own way of students displaying their learning using a map in our class. We plan to let the students do a self-guided inquiry based on one of the postcards of their choosing next.”

“I used this school kit with my Year 10 Social Studies class. I chose the Mana Rangatiratanga card because this was relevant to the NZ Land Wars topic we are doing at the moment. I felt even within that one card there was so much to unpack: which is good but also hard for my students to get their heads around.”

These sorts of resources are essential in giving the depth and breadth of information that would be time consuming to find. The videos and links all came together to deepen the discourse that was had even with the year 4 students.

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? We have not exhausted the use of this kit as we had many students struck down with illness and a rotation of other activities that has prolonged the use of the kit.

“We are continuing to use this kit and will do so until the end of the year. The students were very inspired and were amazed that they were able to make links to what they had learned when they went on outings to museums, recalling many aspects. They enjoyed making timelines and were engrossed in the archival footage, especially when they learned about the Rainbow Warrior and the SpringBok tour as these they related to most (especially the rugby players). To this day they are still recalling information I thought would be forgotten!”
