How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? This kit has shown me that setting a challenge in another language is not a barrier. I will definitely be using this model again.

What was the impact of knowing the stories in this kit were developed in collaboration with their iwi/whānau/community? This empowered my Maori students as they made their own connections and took those connections home to share with whanau. A very powerful resource. As one of my students said 'We felt really connected as the topic was about our peoples history.'

“This was a fantastic kit! I loved teaching it and my learners loved the challenges of locating the places and then exploring and unpacking the events that happened there. The level of challenge the pepeha provided hooked in my learners from the outset and empowered my Maori students as they could see themselves in the resources. Loved this!”

“This unit is fabulous! Our students are fully engaged and love discovering new ways to research and/or locate information. The idea that we have largely been 'sold' a colonialist viewpoint has been an eye-opener and has given a greater appreciation for taking time to find out all sides of the story - both for NZ history stories and in our own day-to-day interactions here and now. Thank you.”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? Absolutely and already contacting people to bring this alive. It also helps you go looking for these stories and find interest in what happened locally

“Loved the tactile items included as well as the pictures! Our students enjoyed being able to "see" different items in their hands as we worked through the regional areas. They were surprised to learn how little they knew of their own hometown, so we worked through all three of the levels for our location. These kits are so useful and worth whatever they are costing. So much work goes into them; it's an amazing resource.”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? We're still, busy exploring one of the prompts of 'Think you know where we are." We are using Ahi Kaa, so have improved our understanding of the significance of Bastion Point. Just completing Task 1: Mourning with the nation this time.

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? Definitely could use the same model - take photos of local historical landmarks etc and collect related artefacts. Students would be excited to see places they recognise.

This aspect is great - with history I'm catious of teaching stories that don't belong to me or worried that I'm not doing them justice. To have iwi involved in this process ensures we are teaching the stories well.

“We enjoyed exploring the 'Solidarity' card as a part of our unit on the history of rugby. It lead the students to learn about the causes of protests around the Springbok tour and look at the different points of view. We analysed the photograph of the protest in the middle of the feild and discussed what we could see. The students found the pamphlets produced by HART about apartheid especially shocking, this was a good way to emphasize the impact apartheid had on the majority of South Africans. Next, we will investigate the 'Prerana' card and look at an example of racism here in Aotearoa. It's great how you can find links between the cards to connect the learning.”
