How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? Not my confidence but definitely provided me with a lot more content that I didn't already know which I could then pass onto my students.

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? Yes it has. Could maybe use this model but finding the stories is the tricky part.

What was the impact of knowing the stories in this kit were developed in collaboration with their iwi/whānau/community? The fact that the stories were real was something that the kids really liked as it then prompted their own prior knowledge.

“This kit is sooooooo cool and my class was just fascinated by it. We opened it together and had a look at all the photos and pieces that were in it. The cards were great conversation starters and we learnt a lot and used our knowledge and research skills to locate the places across NZ. The student website is also well done and easy for kids to follow. I have used A LOT of School Kits over the years and this has to be one of my favourite kits of all time.”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? Slightly. At our kura, we are already encouraged highly to explore this for inquiry.

“At our kura we have been focusing on Aotearoa NZ Histories for inquiry for a term. Certain parts of the pack were helpful, especially the online resources. The physical images, while great, were not super helpful at a Year 7/8 level. Some students were interested in learning more about the stories that were in the pack, and visually I as a teacher found the images and resources beautiful.”

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? This is such a great start for any teacher who is feeling overwhelmed by the Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum. There is so much content available to support teachers and students.

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? I feel that teachers in our area could definitely use this model to create content (with support of local iwi) for our local area.

“This is the most incredible resource using both hands-on/physical resources as well as a rich digital resource in the form of the site. The activities that go with each story are engaging and support students across a range of levels. Scaffolding by the teacher is definitely required (particularly at the Year 5/6 level) to support students with making the most out of the tasks on the website. I'll definitely be using this resource for years to come!”

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? I was confident in delivering the history of New Zealand in general, and of my own local area, but this fills in the gaps of areas that I am not familiar with.

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? I am lucky enough to have already explored my local history in depth, but this has given me an exciting new way to deliver this information!

“This was a really cool resource for the kids to make connections with the world around them! We used it as a reading activity and it was great for them to realise the events that happened around our beautiful country. They were so excited when they found a pepeha that connected with their own and were engaged to find more out about that area.”

“Our Year 4 Inquiry focus this term has been around the Culture and Identity context in the AZH Histories curriculum. The Year 4 teachers unpacked this resource together and used it to support our planning and provide learning experiences for our students. The stories, photographs and artefacts included in the kit have generated a lot of thinking and discussion in our classes and led to some great insights and understandings by the students. We have found the kit very useful and will definitely use it again in the future. Thanks School Kit!”

“I've completed the justice unit. It was great learning about some history that I was not aware and that was local to me and students. The tasks and unit as a whole was quite long and detailed and in the busy intermediate schedule I found the a long time it took to move through each task/lesson.”

“The Aotearoa NZ Histories Something Happened Here kit has been a great tool for me to use. It has provided a number of resources, as well as guided activities that I have been able to use with my students. The only downside that I have found is that some of my students do not have devices and I do not have enough devices to share with them as senior students get priority. Perhaps the use of my paper and digital resources for those who do not have access to it would be great.”
