“I have used three of the stories so far and fully intend to use more as the term progresses. Each story has loads of activities for the students to do: research opportunities, videos to watch, sound bites to listen to, artefacts to look at and pictures to decipher. One of the most interesting things for the students is to find out where the co-ordinates take us!”

“It was great to have the cards linking to stories in our history all over Aotearoa. There was so much to go on - the only shame is we ran out of time to fully get through it all! However, I'm aiming to use bits and pieces throughout other learning areas. The quality of the resources are fantastic, highly engaging and relevant.”

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? It has helped a lot. I can see that teaching nz histories involve a variety of resources and ‘detective work’ investigating

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? Very much so. We started looking at one that was based in our region. My learners are now asking what else has happened, especially around our Kura

“I really enjoyed learning alongside my students. Showing Ako (both student and teacher as learners). We enjoyed unpicking the pepeha which was massive for us as a lot of our learners didn’t know what a pepeha was and none of them knew where to start. I think I can say we have begun our own journeys in navigating our own pepeha as we know what it means and what it involves. It’s been great to see the students learn and decipher the meaning but also enjoying the process. The stories were very in depth so I was able to gauge where to go and when to stop which was very easy with this kit. I liked how flexible it is for our learners. We have unpicked two stories so far and each one we do we get better at. I have found that my learners are learning new skills especially for inferring photos, maps and graphs which is quite beyond their learning but they are beginning to understand.”

“This resource pack is an amazing combination of unique stories, engaging physical objects and photos, and tasks that can be delivered as independent or completed as whole class exploration. My neighbour teacher is using this resource for her reading comprehension tasks. Next term I will be doing the same. I'm looking forward to unpacking a story with my class, allowing them to independently research using the website, and utilising more computer skills such as Google maps to make more connections.”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? The primary sources were great. It was easy to choose those historical stories that related to our place. We have integrated the local histories curriculum across all of our class programmes (Yr 2-11 currently).

“I used this resource with a Year 11 class and found the many resources (around a multitude of topics) immensely useful. We were able to choose histories that are local to us and had played a part in the environment and people around our area.”

“This resource was great for my year 7 and 8 students, we had a look through all the cards together and settled on Protest. At first it was a bit confusing to know how much to read and how it linked to the objects so I read it aloud to the class and we started to discuss various parts of the text and look into the links. The supporting maps and old petition examples were really helpful to get a feel for the scale of the protest and the determination of Whina Cooper. I added a task to writers' toolbox for my students to write a summary with keywords from the event, they enjoyed this process and retained more information.”
