In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? As the Dean I had a very good idea for what issues the students here face as well as having teenage children myself nothing was a surprise for me, however I think the perception for some of the students definitely changed from start to finish.

Please describe your comfort level in delivering the more mature content within this kit Again this is stuff I talk about at home with my own children so was more than happy to delve in with my class especially towards the end of the year as relationships were well and truly established. I do think though that I could've possibly taught this

“This was an awesome kit and extremely relevant to Year 7 children who are almost all fully involved in online behaviours. I will definitely be signing up for this one again.”

In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? Statements made: They were challenged by the notion that the online and offline behaviors should be the same. They were aware of online dangers but rather naïve about the ongoing consequences of these. Worryingly they were so concerned about being bullied

I selected the areas that were most suited to the year 7 &; 8 students in my community. The kit provided plenty of scope. If you consider some to the sexual content mature then we understand the term differently. The

“A good range of context/scenarios to choose from so that I could make the learning relevant to my classroom. I shared the kit with another class and they also found it useful. I thought that it provoked good conversations and there was a range of constructs to use.”

In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? I finally understood what online pressures my students were going through. By the end of this kit I was surprised by the number on safe online strategies they developed.

Please describe your comfort level in delivering the more mature content within this kit I have had similar conversations with my class around sexuality education. My students were very mature in handling the information that was delivered and I felt comfortable delivering the more mature content in this kit.

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? I was surprised by the number of inappropriate material they were already seeing online.

“A great kit that was perfectly suited to my class at the time. My students were making terrible decisions online until we started looking into this kit. Discussions around online and offline boundaries, our emotions around what we do/see online were really effective in terms of targeting current issued.”

In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? The students were keen for this topic and understood less than I had thought they did. However there is still the perception that they are digital natives and what can we tell them.

Please describe your comfort level in delivering the more mature content within this kit This was a good kit although I did find that we could only go around the issue of pornography and yet many of our students had accessed it, as well as sharing and receiving inappropriate images. I do think we need to be able to discuss this in more detail

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? How willing they were to share

“This kit was very successful to run with our hub of 60 yr 7+8 students. The students, while acting all worldly, were actually still very naïve about what happens online to their data etc. The kit opened up discussions of incidents that had happened to them and the discussions were very robust between students about how to deal with issues. In two cases we contacted parents to suggest following up with Netsafe but were frustrated by their unwillingness to do so.”

“A kit that we will be revisiting for our new class next year, as it links so well with our Digital Citizenship/BYOD focus in the first month. Loved the way you focused on some philosophical questions that got kids thinking and talking .”

“This was yet another AMAZING resource from School Kit! It was really timely for us as we were having a few issues with our students and their online behaviour. It's also one that I intend on starting the new school year with. Thanks guys!!”

Students realised that communication via text or message could be misinterpreted and lead to situations that were uncomfortable. We also spoke about your online bubble (from John Parsons) and how we needed to be aware of exactly who can see what.

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? The number of students that have been bullied! It really was shocking!! Also the lack of awareness some parents have in terms of what their own child is 'saying' in messages or texts. The language us shocking!

“For my Year 7 students this was a fantastic opportunity to check in with them and their online behaviour. I had excellent buy in from parents too and feel that this School Kit was a way to open up discussions. Kia ora!”
