How has this kit impacted your class culture toward whenua ora (land wellness) and sustainability? We did our clean up at school because I couldn't organise an off site trip but the class have taken much more pride in our school grounds since then and still remind other kids across the school to not litter so that it keep sour sea rubbish free. We even made a video to share with the school about the impacts that littering has. They have gained an understanding they didnt have before about hte journey ribbihs goes on to get to the ocean and all the reprecussions that come with that. They talk about how we should recycle everything and came up with excellent sustainability solutions to help our turtle we adopted to live in a clean rubbish free ocean.

Diary of a Turtle helped my students better understand the impact plastic waste can have on marine life. Agree
My class absolutely loved this kit. It inspired them and I was able to connect it across almost all of the learnign we did for 2 weeks. They were so engaged and asked for updates on our turltel regularly. It was really easy to use and just as easy to make it work for your classroom. I didn't use every activity or do it in the same order as was suggested but I was able to create an excellent unit that linked in with our kaitiagitanga theme for the term and have great learning opportunities that were hands on and really fun. Have kept everyting so I am able to repeat with my classes in the future.

The kids absolutely loved this kit and we kept going for so much longer than I had planned. Even now that we are finished, they keep asking we can check our turtle. We had the Sea Cleaners come to school to talk to us, and this helped with the enthusiasm level as well. The kids loved to pick up the rubbish with their own gloves and analyse what it was.

Which kit components were the most impactful and why? Tracking the Sea Turtle and getting messages from the Sea Cleaners because it hooked the children in. Many children from my class said to their peers, "Thanks for putting your rubbish in the bin, you just saved an endangered sea turtle.

Ngahape, a year 2 and 3 class from Korakonui school loved this kit. What they don't know about Sea Turtles is not worth knowing. They tracked Ariel a green sea turtle. They learnt all about the importance of keeping our waterways rubbish free. They planted native trees around a fresh water spring on a local farm, educated our school on why we need to protect all waterways. Don't let the fact that your school is not near a sea stop you from taking part in this kit, after all, all water leads to the sea.

This kit was excellent. Being able to track an actual Sea Turtle was great, as the kids were so excited to see each day where the turtle was and try to come up with reasons for the movement. My class got right into protecting these creatures and even wrote a letter to the local newspaper about litter in our area. Then we got in touch with the local council and the children were invited to design a sign to place at the entrance to our beach, which is right near our school. The mayor came and unveiled this permanent sign, and the kids felt empowered and valued. We also designed posters which are on display in the main part of town on digital noticeboards. This all came about after taking part in this kit. A really awesome term of authentic learning.

Which kit components were the most impactful and why? The text messages from the Sea Cleaners- the students loved pretending that they were Winnie and writing a diary about her adventures in the sea. We loved tracking her each day, we really enjoyed cleaning and learning about rubbish and the impacts it has on the environment if we do not do our bit to keep our sea clean!

My class absolutely loved tracking and following WInnie the turtle who was released In Florida,USA. Each day we would login to the sea conservation website and see how far she had travelled each day. We still look at her progress! The students had a lot of fun cleaning up our school so that rubbish doesn't end up in the water for creatures like WInnie, to accidently eat. We created artworks of the Sea cleaner boat and printed off her travels too.

Our class got quite focused on the rubbish collection around our school and have continued it regularly since starting the school kit. They loved the title of Rubbish Rangers and in fact I was telling a parent and she said she liked that title too and was going to use it in the future as well.

My akomanga of 18 Y0/1 absolutely LOVED this inquiry. We went hard and fast over a two week period, with almost all out learning linking to the topic - and they THRIVED. There was so much creativity and opportunities to extend. They still ask about our turtle 'Seayonce' even 9 weeks later.

I have really enjoyed Diary of a Turtle this term. It linked with our Topic unit which was Science - Survival. I was able to focus the whole term around this topic. For our Reading, Writing, Maths and other curriculum areas I have built them around our topic. We had an amazing rubbish clean up of our school and gully area. Another class at our school is also doing Diary of a Turtle so we did our rubbish clean up on the same week. We sorted and took photos of the rubbish and wrote an email to share with the rest of the school our concerns. We also had a visit from Nick Ling who is Associate Professor in Biology and Ecology at University of Waikato come and give a talk to my class and the other class who were also looking at turtles. He gave a great talk all about turtles in our waterways and how this is a problem and could become even more of a problem with climate change.
