Diary of a Turtle helped my students better understand the impact plastic waste can have on marine life. Agree
The kids loved this! We have a strong culture of kaitiakitanga at our school so this fitted really well. We took the turtle tracker to a new level, with 'real' text mesasges. We also researched turtles and integrated our reading, writing and maths. Our whole team went to our local beach to clean up and the parent support was amazing. Real value in doing this kind of learning!

The children loved adopting a turtle and we chose Haven to watch closely. They loved the daily imessages from the Sea Cleaner boat and loved tracking Haven. I got some great creative writing from the diary activity too. On our cleaning day the children loved bringing in rubbish grabbers and using the gloves that were provided. They were proud of collecting rubbish around the local campuses(our 6 and 7 year olds realised that college kids have such a habit of not using rubbish bins and pollting their grounds!) and we cleaned the neighbouring creeks. They felt they were helping the sea life in the stream and preventing the rubbish from travelling into the ocean! Such a great resource and the children got right into it.

The "A Day in the Life of a Turtle" educational kit proved to be a good resource. It was a perfect fit for our study of the ocean, adding significant depth and engagement to our classroom work. What immediately stood out was how interactive the kit is. It had a good mix of hands-on activities and a "diary" element that allowed students to track a turtle's journey. Crucially, the kit provides a good amount of education about turtles, covering key biological facts and the conservation challenges they face. The information was presented clearly, making it accessible to our junior students. By focusing specifically on sea turtles, the kit naturally fitted in with our work on the ocean and allowed us to make tangible connections between specific species and the broader health of the marine environment. The "A Day in the Life of a Turtle" kit was a well-designed, comprehensive, and valuable teaching aid.

Myself and the students loved the Diary of a Turtle kit. We are using it as part of our Tangaroa unit of work. The children were keen to find out more about turtles in New Zealand. They are now getting into looking at how we can help the turtles.

Which kit components were the most impactful and why? Adopting a turtle, the children related to it well and loved taking ownership of its safety. The text messages from the sea cleaners were amazing, the children really believed were were getting messages about our beloved turtle. The collaborative art was perfect for our little ones, and it helped them get a deeper understanding of how large a turtle actually is.
How many bags of rubbish did your class collect? We filled one as a class. It was a little tricky for little ones. Our school is extra clean anyway. :)
How has this kit impacted your class culture toward whenua ora (land wellness) and sustainability? We are so aware of what belongs in our ocean and what doesn't. We learnt that what we see on the ground flies into the sea too, so now we are extra diligent at picking up rubbish.

The class adored making a collabortaive art work of a turtle, and we even created our own turtle and looked a how to crete a habitat.
