Which kit components were the most impactful and why? The adopt a turtle made it a lot more personable and easier for quick engagement and connection for tamariki! Checking in on location, talking about maps and tracking, and kids developing empathy quickly to then broaden to other marine line. Definite biggest impact in our class!! So many great discussions using ‘Lil Mango’ as an example.
How many bags of rubbish did your class collect?
How has this kit impacted your class culture toward whenua ora (land wellness) and sustainability? Tamariki are a lot more aware when they see rubbish now. They notice it and want to stop it because otherwise “it will hurt Lil Mango!!” Even more awareness and quick action to pick up litter when they see it near drains or gutters and rivers and streams.

Diary of a Turtle helped my students better understand the impact plastic waste can have on marine life. Agree
My students absolutely loved doing this. Having a story and a turtle to ‘adopt’ really drew them in instantly and it was very simple to drive empathy and expand awareness about the impact of plastic on wildlife. Can weave into so much of your usual mathematics and literacy planning, reading and writing about plastic and the harms, tracking and calculating distance and talking about maps. Such a gold mine, and the students LOVED asking to check in on where ‘Lil Mango’ was. Tamariki also became a lot more aware of how much litter was in our school grounds, and they started picking it up during their lunch time because “this litter will hurt animals.” Really recommend this for all teachers. The resources are fantastic, and having gloves and bags ready to bring the action into this inquiry was so helpful and lovely. You can dive into this on a surface level and get a lot of good mahi out of it, but also so much potential to go really deep and extend in here if your planning has the time. Thanks so much!!
