How did this resource help students understand process of elimination using data analysis? Ākonga who rushed to make a diagnosis soon learned that they absolutely needed to use all the data available and eliminate possibilities in a deliberate manner.

What feedback have you received from students or parents about the learning in this kit? 180 ākonga from one kura can't be wrong - the students want to learn more, play more, discover more.
“Story Vets 24 was used in my class for a STEM rotation - 180 ākonga, split into 6 groups and rotating around fantastic science-based activities. In my class we became apprentice vets. We observed. We discussed possible issues. We probed for extra information. We researched. We diagnosed. We did it together - Nāu te rourou, nāku te rourou, ka ora ai te iwi. Yes - the tamariki were confused when first confronted with mastitis. But what conversation it led to! And who diagnosed the anxious chicken the fastest? Those with prior knowledge. Some great conversation there too. We'll continue being apprentice vets this term - there's coding to do! More exploring. More learning. Thank you so much - what an amazing resource, once again.”

“I found the kit incredily difficult to understand initially, after speaking to the support crew it became clearer but I still didn't feel completely confident in delievering the kit well. Once we unpacked it, it did become clearer and the children really enjoyed the elmination process and the unplugged task. It was a very informative kit with some wonderful resources.”

“My class really enjoyed the Story Vets School Kit. I used it as my reading program and stretched this out over multiple weeks/sessions. The children worked collaboratively and were motivated to complete the tasks and find out more about their specialised animals. The final task where they had to follow the procedures and give a diagnosis was such a success. I'd definitely recommend.”

How did this resource help students understand process of elimination using data analysis? The real life cases that were assigned to the students to diagnose were really great and engaging. They had to sort through the symptoms and possible conditions and rule out any that were unlikely based on their findings. It gave them ownership of the task as they were the ones investigating rather than being given the diagnosis straight away.

Did this kit increase your students awareness of the skills needed to work in the vet industry? They are all farm kids so already had an interest in animals. This kit really opened their eyes about what is involved in being a vet and the different areas they could be focusing on. They worked out it's pretty complicated but rewarding!

What feedback have you received from students or parents about the learning in this kit? We shared our learning at our small school assembly, parents were very impressed with their learning and commented what a cool kit it was. Other teachers commented how good it was at relating to real life cases and engaging the students. The students enjoyed working through the kit, especially being the vets at the end. The case file videos at the end were fantastic, the students enjoyed seeing if their diagnosis were correct.
“A great teaching kit about animals- was fun and engaging. The activities were interactive and showed how to examine and diagnose animals. Students enjoyed pretending to be vets, we are a rural school so the students were all farm kids but learnt so much about the processes involved in diagnosing animals. All of the supporting tools were very useful and the kit was easy to follow/use.”

Most students understood the process of elimination and this kit gave them good opportunities to practice this understanding. Some students initially jumped to quick conclusions but with the support of their group, they were able to carefully consider all the elements.

“It took my class a bit of time to get into the kit but once we got to the diagnostic stage, they enjoyed working out the clues and discussing them. They also enjoyed becoming experts in an animal and having some research time.”

“I wanted to love this kit, as I have loved all the others. The kids just didn't really seem to get involved in this one for some reason. Many declared that they didn't want to be a vet and it became the main negative throughout. Lots did find it interesting though.”
