“I used the kit with my maths extension group for extra work whilst we work through the 'workbook'. The students found it motivating and enjoyed learning about the various case histories. Some went deeper into research, it applied to some of their experiences with live stock.”

What feedback have you received from students or parents about the learning in this kit? The students loved the hands-on, role-playing aspect — many said it was one of their favourite learning experiences because it felt like “real-life science.” They enjoyed working in teams, wearing their “vet” badges, analysing data, and solving animal mysteries together. Parents commented that their children came home excited to talk about what they were learning, especially about how vets use evidence and reasoning to make decisions.
“Our class just worked through the SchoolKit Story Vets kit, and it was a hit! We “enrolled” in vet school, learned to use data and lab tests to rule in or rule out diagnoses, and rewrote each patient’s story using evidence. The mix of narrative (fairy-tale twist), coding tokens, x-ray glasses, lab cards, and animal visuals made it immersive and challenging. Students loved taking on roles—examining “patients”, testing, and presenting their diagnosis. It felt cross-curricular (science, tech, literacy all blended), and it pushed their critical thinking and teamwork skills. Overall, a super engaging, hands-on experience that got us thinking like veterinarians!”

How did this resource help students understand process of elimination using data analysis? It did not as there was a lot of new learning for my ākonga especially with the specific vocabulary for animals/ species. This meant the kit was used more as an engagement tool for literacy and development of vocabulary skills.

What feedback have you received from students or parents about the learning in this kit? Students really loved playing with the resources, using it for imaginative play.
“Students were postively engaged from the moment I opened the box and showed them the resources due to the high quality and realism. More detailed lessons would have helped in the delivery of the unit especially for teachers like myself who have not done coding/ used scratch beforehand. Our kura also has old, out of date chromebooks which also added to our difficulties of using scratch.”

What feedback have you received from students or parents about the learning in this kit? Students liked being taken through a scenario based on common and liked fariytales.
“This was an excellent unit of learning. We used it across our whole community and integrated it through most curriculum areas. The students engaged well with the idea that they were student vets, and made learning decisions based on the unit. We even took them on a zoo visit, which included a vet tour. The resources were fantastic and didn't require much adaptation for the diversity of learners that we had.”

How did this resource help students understand process of elimination using data analysis? it works well but I think having a step by step check list on the form rather than as a seperate poster would be more helpful for them to manage for themselves.

“This is the second time i have worked with the Story Vets kit. It is an excellent project for my Science Extension class. We study physiology and anatomy so the chance to explore the different animals and their ailments is a challenge they are excited to rise to in order to solve their diagnoses! They love listening to the heartbeats and respirations. I am always amazed at how focused they are and how they always seem to be able to work out what is wrong.”
