We had so much fun looking at the chemistry of creating a cake and appreciate how much time and effort had gone into the planning. Students also baked at home to tell us what they created. This term we studied chemistry and measurement which lended itself to this activity! We found it challenging making the cake at we had quite a few allergies in the class but was good to make others aware of the different needs.

How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing? Exploring healthy foods at school will promote better eating at home. Now we should do a lunchbox one.
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? Cost of it all.
Our class didn't really do the exploring of different ingredients as it worked out to be a bit expensive, however we did explore different cakes made with a vegetable in it, putting a healthier spin on it. The students made a carrot cake, beetroot cake, courgette cake, and a spinach cake. The parents were invited and judged. Everyone agreed that even though the spinach cake sounds terrible, looks green, which was a bit off putting for some, it tasted so good. Gluten free too! This was awesome and inspired students to cook at home and we will be doing more cooking with my class. Thank you for inspiring!

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them We are doing a school kit on backing and substitute things to make baking . I like that the school kit came with cans of food that we can use. And substitute things like apples for sugar and chickpeas for fat. We have learnt how to substitute things in baking. We got in groups of 4 or 5 and had to substitute 80g of stuff. Some groups used beetroot, some people used chickpeas. We decided that substituting chickpeas and apples was the best. I enjoyed it when we had to work together to get the best recipe. Some people had to bring cupcake moulds so we could make cupcakes. One bad thing that I thought that my group used chickpeas and at the end it had hole chickpeas in it (but it was ok).I LIKED THAT WE WORKED TOGETHER WHEN WE WHERE BAKING SUBSITUTING SUGAR IS IMPORTANT AND IT IS IMPORTANT FOR OUR HEALTH AND THEIR IS ALOT OF SUGAR IN FOOD. WE USED LESS SUGAR AND REPLACED IT WITH APPLES. WE ALSO USED BEETROOT AND CHICKPEAS AND LEARNED THAT THESE MAKE A GOOD SUBSTITUTE AND THE MUFFINS STILL TASTED GOOD. WE LEARNT ALOT ABOUT THE THING WE CAN USE AS SUBSTITUTES FOR A RANGE OF INGREDIENTS AND ENJOYED DOING THE SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS TO SHOW WHAT HAPPENS WHEN INGREDIENTS ARE MIXED TOGETHER AND THE BUBBLE STRATEGY.
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? Learning about the different healthier options that can be used in baking/cooking and also the chemistry component where the children used a variety of ingredients to see what causes the 'bubbles.'
What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? Healthier eating options and finding alternatives to sugar. Researching recipes to see what ingredients you can substitute in baking. That cooking is closely involves science and can be a lot of fun.
How effective was this kit in promoting healthy food in your classroom? It created a lot of discussion about what ingredients are in foods and what that there is a lot of sugar in some foods. It also got them to think about the different types of alternatives that they could use instead of to sugar and fat.
What learning from this kit can students take home to impact their family's wellness and health? Being more aware of what is in our food. That a balance in diet is important and cutting back on sugars and fat is important for their well being and health and choosing healthy alternatives is better for them.

How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing? An understanding about what we eat and the knowledge that often cheaper food is doing more harm than good.
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? Cost of living and access to healthier options.
The class had a great time using this kit to learn, conduct experiments, and create recipes with a variety of ingredients. They were excited to continue researching and discovering new ingredients that could be used to make the best cakes. The experiments were not only fun but also provided ample opportunities for learning across various subjects for all the children involved.

How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing? They have learnt lots not only about the Science, but definitely about making healthy food choices
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? none
We integrated the kit with our unit on Kitchen Science. We had been investigating chemical reactions by making hokey pokey, popcorn etc. But making the cake was more than just the Science, it was also about making good choices about healthy eating. The students were really surprised that sugar was not good for their health.

One student also shared how they've never baked before and they really enjoyed doing and think that they would go home and get mum and dad to bake with them.
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? Chemistry of baking. Students were empowered to experiment with baking once they knew how the chemistry works.

How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing? Switching for healthier options in baking.
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? Having the choice to buy their own healthy food. Healthier options are more expensive.
At first, my students thought that a vegetable cake would be the worst thing on the planet. Once experimenting with their vegetable cake, the students loved it and wanted to explore other vegetables. They also loved figuring the science out and it made for great team building.

How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing? Generally our tamariki are eating really well, but options and education are always good. Many had not baked much before so they were exposed to a new skill and also hygiene around baking and storing food.
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? Minimal at our school
Amazing! The practical, yet achievable challenge of this kit was so great. My class loved this so much and it was great to see the cooperation, communication, negotiation and problem-solving amongst the class. We loved the multi-step process. The layout of the sheets was great and I loved the approach to breaking things down into 20g chunks to modify the recipe as a lower sugar recipe. We had some epic fails and pleasant surprises at how our recipes worked. This kit had limitless options and it would have been interesting to try other veges in the cakes, but alas, time restrictions. Thanks for a really engaging kit!

How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing? I haven't considered that
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? Not sure but many are in low income households. They all get school lunches, which are great.
Learners were engaged in all aspects of this work. It was interesting to see the results of various combinations and some screwed-up faces when they tasted some of the outcomes. We did three rounds of combos and found our favourites. On the side, learners worked on physical and chemical changes and now have some idea of why cake 'acts like it does'.
