This kit formed the basis of our Term 3 Inquiry. Students became scientists, bakers, creators, designers, and team players as they worked through the various aspects of this kit. It was great to see students experience different roles and as a teacher, to see students take the lead or share skills who don't often get opportunities to shine.

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them My mum said because the muffins had vegetables in them we could make them at home. We ate them all in 1 day. I liked finding out about the vegetables you could put in cakes. Some were yummy but some were yuck. I don't like carrots but cake was really nice.
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? The chemistry information because it gave the students a real insight into the reasons why some ingredients worked better than others and how the process of baking actually worked. It was interesting that once the students had learned and understood the scientific vocabulary they used it all the time. E.G. carbon dioxide rather than saying bubbles. The recipe review sheets were also great as it allowed the students to have a focus on how to effectively review their recipe rather than just commenting about the taste. It made them think at a deeper level

How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing? Giving students the t5ools to support their whanau. One of the students said we should invite our parents to come and cook with us. (something to consider in the future)
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? Cost of healthy ingredients and knowledge on how to coo them and use them.
The students worked in groups when making the vegetable cakes and they became focused on using different vegetables than any of the other groups. The best part was how students involved their whanau in their decision-making about what vegetables they could try and what would work best and why. It even led to some experimenting at home and bringing samples to school. Chocolate cake with beetroot was a real hit which turned into muffins and different options for icing. Cream cheese was voted the best.

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them The best part was mixing everything together. It's like making a secret potion. We mixed eggs, flour, sugar, and those grated veggies. It was fun and kinda messy, but that's what made it cool. 2. We put the batter into the oven, and I felt like a scientist in a lab. I learned that heat makes things change, and our cake got all big and fluffy. I couldn't wait to see what happened next!
Which kit components were the most impactful and why? Nutrition education: Making a vegetable cake introduces children to the concept of incorporating vegetables into their diet in a fun and delicious way. It provides an opportunity to discuss the nutritional benefits of vegetables, including vitamins, minerals, and fiber, helping them understand that healthy food can be tasty too.

How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing? Baking a vegetable cake can be a fun family activity. It encourages bonding time between children and their parents or caregivers, providing an opportunity for communication and cooperation in the kitchen.
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? Healthy food options, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, can be more expensive than processed and unhealthy foods. Families with limited budgets may find it challenging to afford nutritious options
We used this vegetable cake as an educational activity that went beyond the act of baking itself. It provided an opportunity to learn about nutrition, science, math, creativity, culture, and even broader topics like sustainability and food safety. This was a hands-on way to engage with various educational concepts while enjoying a delicious treat at the end.
