This was a great project that fitted with our Math programme - measurement and also our healthy eating unit. The children enjoyed the challenge but did try to substitute too many ingredients in their first trial. This encouraged great discussions about what they needed to do next time. The final try was successful and the cakes were enjoyed.

Please provide 2+ examples of student voice on the kit's impact on them I had one pair say "They didn't cook properly but they were so yum". Children a ruled by their stomachs sometimes. They are fully baked cupcakes, they just didn't bake in the specified time.

How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing? The discussions around sugar have been taken home by many - this is from feedback from their core teacher.
My experience with the Make Vege Cake kit was challenging - time was a huge factor for this. I used it in a food technology setting, teaching year 7/8s - this helped with space and equipment. Our ovens didn't bake our cakes at 180º in the specified time. Suggestions for others: - Test out the cakes first in the oven you will use with the class. Don't assume that because you make muffins/cupcakes frequently that it will be the same in class. - Mash up the veges/beans that you're using. - Crack and whisked the eggs for the groups to weigh out. I think I over-complicated it when I said "crack the egg and weigh it then make the other ingredients weigh the same". Some groups had 55g, and some groups had 65g. While this would work in theory, there was too much confusion. I will be using this kit again with the other classes I teach over the year.
