How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing? Children take home ideas. Found making the as cake in a cup enabled more experimentation.
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? Cost and knowledge on how to present healthy foods in a palatable way. Time poor.
Firstly, the students had to decide what base cake they would use to make the cakes. They enjoyed experimenting with different vegetables in a cake. It encouraged them to think about flavours, texture and tasting vegetables for sweetness before putting them into a cake. The investigation enabled opportunities for maths, literacy, group work and science. The tasting and comment sheets for each cake were surprising.

How can the learning in the kit go beyond the classroom to improve whānau wellbeing? We posted about our baking on Seesaw as we went in the hope that parents would have discussions with students about their learning and what they had discovered.
What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? Cost, parent time to cook
What fun we had creating our own recipes and learning about the science and maths of cake making. There was a lot of trial and error, discussion and changes to ideas. I was surprised that in my class I had either competent little bakers or students who had never baked before. The skills were varied but everyone was able to contribute to our learning.

Learners and the School Staff enjoyed the learning process. The science behind cake making and the food technology aspect was very much appreciated. It definitely made the learners critically think about what they were putting into their bodies. What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? Time and organisation at home - much easier to buy convenience foods or packaged foods. Our families all work and many run farms on top of, so easy meal ideas are necessary. Whanau knowledge into healthy options is also a barrier.
We did this as a class over a very messy last week of school. Kids were in and out which was disruptive and meant the students couldn't all engage with each step of the process. They all enjoyed the last part of making the cakes.

What barriers do your students face to access healthy eating? Cost of food in general. Too expensive to eat healthy in todays supermarkets. Fresh fruit and vegies should be so cheap in NZ because we have so much growing space and yet it is all so so out of reach for so many.
This kit was well-resourced with everything you need to do the experiments. We thought it was great having the scales to use to measure things out. The choice of ingredients at first was worrying but turned out to be really fun as we started the project!
