I really like the way that they incorporated the pepeha and Te Ao Maori into the resource we were able to talk about Papatuanuku, our local awa and our taniwha that reside in our waters. “Kia ora, we love this resource. It was quite difficult to get started because we had to learn so many different things but our students really enjoyed testing the different waterways. This year, we have had a very wet winter and we had to be careful what waterways we visited. Sorry the pictures are not that good. We can't find the folder of the stream photos.”

We are continuing with our enviroschools work with a group of students and continuing our planting project and some students have shown an interest in testing the river at different times of the year and different locations to gather data over time.

In what ways did this kit develop understanding of the cultural significance of water in Te Ao Māori? Central Otago is a community that relies hugely on water for farming, growing and leisure. Water quality We also tied in with this unit a waterways planting on a local farm. Our students are very aware of water supply and water quality issues now.

“We have had some great feedback from students, parents and the wider community about this project. On our river visit we were filmed by The South Today and a video clip appeared on the ODT site. This raised a lot of interest in the testing we were doing!”
