I've been a business customer since the late 90s and decided to move all my current accounts over as well since the ethical stance is important. However I tried to pay a bill for £3000 yesterday. Went through the phone app security on my phone (face ID and password) and then had to use the seperate keycard device to confirm. All good if long winded. However received messages today saying call them to find the payment hadn't actually been made and they wanted to do some checks. This involved me calling them and being subjected to the most ridiculous and patronising call I've ever had. Not only that but he asked me, in public, to say my password in full, not a 3rd or 5th letter etc which is potentially highly inadvisable and amusing given the call was to ostensibly make sure the transaction and account were secure. Following questions included why was I making the payment including details of the items being bought, how did I get the recipient bank details and when I said it was an invoice sent by email was told to please go and double check that the email was genuine. When I said I knew who the email was from I was told that he had written down that I had refused to double check. The whole process was stupidly intrusive and insulting. I totally get the need for security but this was just not workable. Sadly I am now closing my accounts but I doubt they will care.

I joined as I wanted an ethical bank and was happy to pay the monthly fees for this. However, the app is rudimentary as is the web-site. Contacting them is challenging and I think the time has come that they don't just rest on their ethical status but actually put some service behind it.

Easy to give them money,not so easy to get it back. I logged on to reclaim my matured & closed Regular saver,& met a wall of resistance. 33 days!!!? More information, 5 business days. Been in ethical for 25+ years,not doing this one again,still waiting for my money back.

A telephone 'help' session which seemed designed to create obstacles rather than seek solutions. Also, they can't even get my name right - even though I have invested with them for years.

The customer service didn't help at all in finding solutions about identity verification. I mentioned different options but the only answer was or "this is not in the list so I am not sure, you could send and then we check" or "we are very strict about ID verification". I have still to receive a feedback to the documents I submitted but regardless of the outcome they seem to be more focused on creating walls (barriers to entry) to new customers rather then welcoming them and making and on-boarding process smooth.

It is important that customers provide us with ID documentation that satisfies requirements under UK banking regulations that apply to online applications. This does limit our flexibility to an extent which can sometimes understandably be frustrating for customers. We apologise that we were not able to provide you with the answers you were looking for when you called.

I have had a savings account with Triodos for several years because I value sustainability principles and the stability of a bank relying on funds of individual savers not fickle big business investors. BUT have been very disappointed at the process of trying to move from the account I had which had very low interest to the new Tridos saver offering 1% interest. They messed up and did not transfer funds to me on schedule for 30 days so I was in a crisis as the funds had to be there for other essential purchases- in the end it was over 40 days from my initial instruction. Trying to shift to a better interest account within Triodos it was frankly a nightmare. My loyalty and being an existing customer did not seem to be valued at all. It took ages and lots of silly paper work and information had to be sent even though it was information they already had because I was already a customer. The final insult when it was finally sorted was an information pack in the post saying "Welcome to Triodos". Just like all the other banks it seems loyalty means nothing and is not valued.
